Vibrant Crater Lake – Lively Geysers – Golden Falls – Spectacular Glacier
Breakfast at your hotel. Your guide will meet you in the lobby of the hotel.
Depart Reykjavík and drive to the world-famous Golden Circle area. Your day’s adventure starts with a visit to Kerið, a visually stunning volcano crater lake. The combination of distinctive red volcanic rock and the vibrant blue lake make Kerið one of Iceland’s most recognizable craters.
Next, drive to the geothermal fields of Geysir with bubbling mud pools and the high-spouting Strokkur hot spring. After some time to walk around this quirky geothermal area, you’ll head to the area of Gullfoss waterfall.
Here, your group will board a highland bus for a drive on a mountain track deep into the highland wilderness. The vast views of black sand desert and rock formations lend an air of mystery to the day. (Expect some bumpy roads, which are a part of the adventure.) The destination is the magnificent Langjökull, Iceland’s second largest glacier.
Now it’s time to meet Sleipnir, an enormous red glacier truck. Named after Óðinn’s eight-legged stallion, “our” Sleipnir has eight wheels (each as huge as a person) and an 800-horsepower engine. Sleipnir’s design enables it to handle the rugged glacial terrain in relatively smooth comfort. The trusty monster truck takes you up Langjökull to experience the glacier’s beauty up close. During the trip, your glacier guides will share interesting glacier facts and tales of the highlands. The guides will take you on a short ice hike to a mystical and enchanting natural ice cave hidden deep on the glacier. There is something special about standing close to one of those glacial formations that only appear during the winter months.
After returning to “civilisation” you’ll have time admire the dramatic two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall, a spectacular sight in winter when frozen mid-cascade.
Relax after the day’s adventure with a peaceful drive to your accommodation in South Iceland. If the weather conditions are just right, you might even glimpse northern lights dancing in the sky!
Dinner and overnight stay in Southwest Iceland.
If weather conditions are right, your guide will take you on a northern lights hunt on foot in the area outside your hotel tonight, or on the evening of Day 3.
