Cycling in the Salzkammergut - From Salzburg to Bad Ischl

What could be more enjoyable than biking on the shore paths of the lakes and to let the soul 'flow' in a wonderfully unspoilt countryside? A tour through the Salzkammergut shows you the World Heritage Side of Hallstatt, the Emperor city of Bad Ischl and wonderful lakes and valleys.

A wonderful cycle tour will be in the Ausseerland where you will pass a landscape looking like alpine pastures with high mountains around. In between lovely little lakes and an old city which is called Bad Aussee. One of the highlights will be certainly the festival city of Salzburg with its old town, fortress and many restaurants and shops.

Characteristic: You mainly cycle along cycle path but you also have to follow little side roads. Little ascents are between the lakes but there are not long. Medium fitness is necessary for this tour.

Tour program

Day 1

Arrival Lake Wolfgangsee

Arrival Lake Wolfgangsee where you will get your tour package in the starting hotel. You may take the public bus from Salzburg to Lake Wolfgangsee or you book a taxi. If you come from direction Vienna, you may take the train to Bad Ischl and the public bus to Lake Wolfgangsee.

You will follow the cycle trail along the lake to the Mozart village of St. Gilgen and on to Lake Mondsee. Afterwards you will partly follow the former railway tracks to Salzburg. The cycle tour ends with a 10 km long descent to Salzburg with free view to the mountains around Salzburg. (Option: Cycle tour from Mondsee to Oberhofen and with the train to Salzburg)

With the train, you will leave the city of Salzburg and start the cycle tour in Oberhofen. First, you will pass the romantic lake of Irrsee, than you reach the famous little city of Mondsee, where the wedding of Sound of Music took place. You will continue following the cycle path along the Lake Mondsee to the Attergau or to Lake Attersee. The Attergau shows you the countryside just a little bit off the tourist lake region with meadows and gardens.

You will follow the lakeside road along Lake Attersee and cycling to the next beautiful Lake Traunsee. Enjoy the wonderful lakeside city of Gmunden with the sea castle of Orth. Afterwards you will cycle along the Traunsee Lake passing the historic village of Traunkirchen to Ebensee.

You will follow the Traun River upwards to the Emperor City of Bad Ischl, where you should visit the Emperor Villa and the famous pastry shop of Zauner. In the afternoon, you continue following the Traun River along the historic brine pipeline trail to Bad Goisern.

With the train, you will go to Tauplitz, where you will find a wide valley with mountain ranges on both sides. Enjoy cycling through meadows and alpine pastures. Depending on your fitness you may cycle over a little mountain pass to Lake Grundlsee or you follow the river cycle trail to Bad Aussee. The last part of the trail leads you along the river passing the nature reserve of Koppenvalley. If the train is not running, you will cycle to Hallstatt/return!

With the ferry you will cross the lake and follow the lovely cycle trail along the lake Hallstatt. Afterwards you will follow the river Traun to the Emperor City of Bad Ischl where you should visit the emperor villa and the famous pastry shop of Zauner.
