Come join us for a ride through the fabulous and remote North Cascades, Methow Valley, and Leavenworth area of Washington State. This is where Seattle-area residents go for a quick and refreshing change of scenery, and weather. Ride westside rainforests surrounded by rugged peaks and passes before descending through Ponderosa pine forestes to the sagebrush desert on the east side of the Cascade Range. Enjoy more than just mountains, meadows, vineyards, lakes, and waterfalls. Ride (or shuttle) the most scenic highway in the state, the North Cascades Highway. Pedal some easy and fun mountain biking terrain and enjoy a hike with glorious views. Try on some cowboy boots while you kick around the "Old West" town of Winthrop, then change in lederhosen for a walk through the Bavairan-themed town of Leavenworth.  You'll be amazed at the diverse landscape that exists in Washington state!

Tour program

Day 1

Head to the entrance of North Cascades National Park for an impressive start to your week!

Meet your guides in Seattle. Shuttle to the entrance of the North Cascades National Park and start the week with a nice warm-up ride along the banks of Diablo Lake. Contemplate Desolation Peak, where famed beat-generation author, Jack Kerouac, scanned the surrounding mountains for forest fires during the summer before On The Road was published. Pedal past cascading waterfalls on your way to Ross Lake and hop in the van for a boost to the top of Washington Pass. Enjoy jaw-dropping views of high alpine peaks while dining on a gourmet lunch spread. Nothing aids the digestion like a freewheeling descent on a bicycle! Coast down the easern slopes of the Cascades to the lovely Inn at Mazama for a 3-night stay.

Approximately 26.5 miles, +1,000ft / -4,000ft. Most folks jump in the van for the big 4.000' climb to the top of Washington Pass!

Ride through the beautiful Methow Valley (pronounced "met-how") - one of Washington's most popular recreation destinations. Here in the remote Okanagan region, golden eagles ply the skies and nest high in the cliffs avove the rivers, white-tiled deer and elk, along with the occasional moose, graze in the forests and meadows. Stop for lunch at Perrygin Lake State Park before heading to the historic "old west" town of Winthrop. From here, hop on a saddle at the ice cream shop, or hop on your bike and pedal back up the valley to the Inn at Mazama.

46 miles - +2,024 ft / -2,024 ft

Put away your cycling shoes for the day and lace up your hiking shoes, we're going hiking in the North Cascades to catch some amazing mountain views. They don't call the North Cascades the "American Alps" for nothing! After the hike, you'll have time to explore and relax at the Inn at Mazama.

4 mile hike (1,700ft gain)

This morning we leave the Methow Valley and shuttle to fjord-like Lake Chelan, the deepest lake in Washington State! Pedal through a region of vineyards and small lakes on the eastern shore of this massive blue gem. Enjoy lunch at a small private winery and cruise back along the lake to Campbell's Resort in the tiny waterfront town of Chelan for the night. Dinner is on your own.

37.5 mi +2,758ft / -2,774 ft (or more)

This morning we continue riding around the southern end of Lake Chelan and along the western shore. Cross over some small hills on a quiet road through open forests and meadows to join the banks of the mighty Columbia River. Before lunch, shuttle a short distance to the charming Bavairan-themed town of Leavenworth. Find out why Seattle area residents flock to this festive town on weekends - in both summer and winter - as you enjoy a relaxing layover afternoon exploring. Have lunch on your own before we check into the Bavarian Lodge right in the heart of town.

If cute towns aren't your thing and you prefer some extra riding in the afteroon, we have a wonderful out and back ride on a paved road that runs deep into the heart of the mountains. From here you can enjoy views of the Stuart Range and the "Enchantments" - a series of high lakes that are now the most popular backpacking mecca in the Cascades.

27.4 miles - +1,278 ft / -1,646 ft (or more)

Take a drive through a whitewater canyon whose surrounding cliffs are famous for nesting raptors to a beautiful state park on the shors of Lake Wenatchee to begin cycling today. Do a loop through the scented pines and back to the lake before lunch. After lunch, you can enjoy a swim or some relaxing time at the lake, or you can set out on an out and back ride along a quiet road following the lake and a river into the remote Cascade mountains. Go as far as you like, or until the pavement ends, before turning around and heading back to the park where we will load bikes for our return to Seattle.

From about 18 miles with 1,000ft of gain up to 45.9 mi +2,006 ft / -2,004 ft

accommodation

Our regional expertise, a constant re-evaluation of last year's inns, and a continuing search for the best experience ensure that our lodging is always among the finest the area has to offer. By limiting the number of guests on each trip, we expand our choices and are able to fit into some smaller, award-winning bed and breakfasts and country inns that wouldn't be able to accommodate a larger group.

Lodging is based upon two people sharing a room with a private bath. If you're traveling solo on any of our trips, we'll assign you a roommate of the same gender, and often of the same age range. There is no extra charge if we can't find you a roommate, even if you sign up the day before the trip starts. You can guarantee a private room and bath if you pay the Single Supplement Fee. Occasionally a room with two beds consists of one bed plus a rollaway bed or sofa bed. Call our office to see if this is applicable to the trip and date you select.

Our guides are selected and trained for unparalleled personal service. Their backgrounds vary, but all share a love for the outdoors and, most importantly, a desire to help people make the most of their vacation. There are several ski instructors, a political analyst, an Emmy-winning journalist, and a college professor, among others. Almost all are college graduates. All are mature adults with expertise in leading our tours and extensive knowledge of the region we travel through. Almost all of last year's guides will be returning to lead our trips again, so you can count on having experienced leaders who love what they do.

Insurance is not included. Travel insurance is required for this tour. Please make sure you are adequately covered.

All meals except for one lunch and one dinner are included in the cost of your tour. On the days that you're on your own for a meal, there will be ample options within walking distance of our location.

At Bicycle Adventures we like to eat well. Dinner is eaten together at the best restaurant in the area each night. If we have to shuttle everyone a short distance to get to that special place, we do it. At most restaurants, you order what you want from the menu. Except for alcohol, everything is included, even appetizers, salad, soup, and dessert. Breakfast is typically provided by the hotels and inns that we stay at, but if there's a local spot known for great breakfast, we'll find it and you'll be treated to a nutritious meal to start your day. Lunch is provided at a state park or similar scenic setting midway during the day’s ride. Guests are always surprised at the variety and quality of lunches we prepare. Besides sandwich fixings and cold drinks, we offer fresh fruits and vegetables and hot lunches such as tortellini with pesto or veggie burritos. If you prefer a certain item of food or drink, just let your tour guide know and we will be sure to prepare just the right lunch to keep your energy up for the rest of the day.

During the day water, fruit juices, soft drinks, energy bars, fruit, and snacks are available from the van. A cold beer from our cooler waits at the end of the day, and you can relive the day’s highlights at our wine and cheese party before dinner.

  • Biking (bikes included)
  • Hiking

You are welcome to ride in the van at any time - no explanation required. Some want a lift for just a few miles; others have ridden in the van for the entire trip. It's your vacation - you decide.

We use a fleet of specially ordered and customized 15-passenger vans. Most have a seven-liter V-10 engine, high rear axle ratio, and heavy-duty trailer towing package for efficiently moving a van full of people pulling a large trailer full of luggage and food. Each van also has heavy-duty professional bicycle racks on top of a custom-made, steelwork platform on the roof.
