Itinerary

After re-planning a nice seven-day trip to "incredible Crete", we thought of combining it with an acquaintance with two of the most impressive islands in the Aegean, volcanic Santorini and the cosmopolitan Mykonos.

Of course, the approach to the islands will not be cosmopolitan, according to our office principles, but we will not try to avoid a little luxury.

So we will get to know Crete with an alternative approach that will include its wonderful mythological, historical and sociological environment, its music and dances,  the beautiful nature, the beaches, the architecture of its traditional villages and cities and the Venetian castles. The feeling from this visit will be unique.

For more than 4,500 years, Santorini  has had a great cultural connection with Crete. According to the prevailing opinion, the destruction of the Minoan civilization is due to the big eruption of the volcano of Santorini (17th  Century BC) and other smaller eruptions. We will visit the prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri, we will taste the wonderful local wine variety "Assyrtiko", we will swim on the red and black beach, we will enjoy the sunset of Oia and the view of the caldera, which we will visit by boat.

In Mykonos we will visit the famous and beautiful beaches of the island, the labyrinthine small town of Mykonos with its intense nightlife and the nearby sacred uninhabited island Delos, the place where Leto gave birth to the god Apollo and the goddess Artemis.

We will return to Athens with the best memories of a really incredible trip.

Tour program

Day 1

Souda Bay - Allied Cemetery - Evening Walk in Chania - Dinner

Arrival tp Chania and Chania Airport pick up. Once you check in, we head to Souda Bay, one of the largest natural harbors in the eastern Mediterranean.

Here, we visit the Allied War Cemetery, the resting place of over 1,500 soldiers, mostly from the Battle of Crete in 1941 — a sobering but important reminder of the island’s role in World War II.

After checking into our hotel, we go for a relaxed early evening walk around the old town of Chania.

The area is known for its well-preserved Venetian architecture, narrow alleys, and harbor built during the 14th century.

It was a major port under Venetian rule, later occupied by the Ottomans, and today it remains one of the most charming towns in Greece.

We end the day with dinner at the old port, where traditional Cretan recipes meet a vibrant local atmosphere.

Day 2

Exploring west Crete - History-Nature

After breakfast, we drive across the mountainous interior of western Crete toward Elafonisi, located on the island’s southwestern tip.

This area is protected under the Natura 2000 program due to its rare ecosystem. The shallow lagoon, white-pink sand, and crystal-clear waters make it ideal for a swim or walk along the shore.

Elafonisi is also known for the small islet just offshore, reachable on foot when the tide is low.

On our return, we stop at Kandanos, a village that suffered heavy destruction by Nazi troops in 1941 in retaliation for local resistance. It’s now a peaceful place with a strong local identity and visible historical memory.

We enjoy a slow lunch in the village and, as always in Crete, we are welcomed with raki and local hospitality.

Back in Chania, the afternoon is yours — ideal for some shopping, another visit to the harbor, or simply relaxing at a café.

Day 3

Chania - Lake Kournas – Arkadi Monastery - Margarites – Rethymno

Today we move eastward, with our first stop at Lake Kournas — Crete’s only natural freshwater lake. It’s surrounded by low hills and olive groves and sits near the border of the Chania and Rethymno regional units.

It’s a great place to stretch our legs and enjoy a coffee by the lakeside.

We continue to Arkadi Monastery, one of the most symbolic sites of modern Greek history.

Built during the Venetian period, the monastery became a center of resistance during the Ottoman occupation. In 1866, hundreds of Cretan fighters and civilians chose to barricade themselves inside rather than surrender — a tragic act that became a symbol of Cretan independence.

For lunch, we visit Margarites, a traditional inland village known for its ceramic workshops.

The area has been producing pottery since Minoan times and many of the artisans here still use wood-fired kilns and traditional techniques.

Our day ends in Rethymno, a coastal city with a rich blend of Venetian, Ottoman, and Greek heritage.

You’ll have free time to explore the old harbor, the Fortezza (a Venetian-era fortress), or enjoy the town’s laid-back seaside rhythm.

Day 4

Across the Mountains to Southern Crete - Boat Ride, Coastal Villages & Marmara Swim

We leave Rethymno in the morning and head south toward Sfakia, a rugged and remote village built into the slopes of the Lefka Ori. Known for its resistance during both Ottoman and German occupations, this area has preserved much of its wild, independent character.

After a short coffee break, we board a boat toward Agia Roumeli, where the famous Samaria Gorge meets the Libyan Sea.

If you wish, there’s time for a short hike into the gorge — just enough to appreciate its scale and raw natural beauty. We then continue by small boat to Marmara Beach, a stunning, secluded bay with clear turquoise waters perfect for swimming.

Lunch is served at a simple beachside taverna with a true “end-of-the-world” feel, accessible only by sea or trail.

We then return to land and continue our journey, passing by the haunting stone walls of Frangokastelo, a Venetian fortress with a long military history and ghostly legends.

By late afternoon, we arrive in Plakias, a laid-back seaside village ideal for a relaxed evening.

Day 5

Palms, Rivers & Ancient Kings – From Preveli to Phaistos and the Shores of Matala

Our day begins with a short drive to the historic Monastery of Preveli, built on a dramatic cliffside with expansive sea views.

The monastery played a vital role in both the 19th-century uprisings and in sheltering Allied soldiers during WWII.

We then descend to Preveli Beach, where a palm forest lines a freshwater river that flows directly into the sea - a rare ecosystem in Europe. There’s time here to relax, swim in both river and sea, or just enjoy the shade of native Theophrastus palms.

For lunch, we stop at Damnoni, a coastal spot known for great food and sea views.

In the afternoon, we head east to the archaeological site of Phaistos, one of the most important palatial centers of the Minoan civilization.

This site was once a rival to Knossos and offers a more open and less reconstructed experience, with its large central court, storage rooms, and sweeping views of the Messara Plain.

We end our day in Matala, a coastal village known for its cliffside caves and its counterculture history.

Once a Roman burial site, the caves became homes for hippies in the 1960s and ’70s.

The beach here is perfect for a sunset swim, and the relaxed vibe makes it a memorable overnight stop.

Day 6

Spinalonga’s Secrets & Olive Oil Trails - From Matala to Elounda

We begin the day leaving Matala and heading northeast, crossing the island toward the region of Lasithi.

Our first stop is a local olive oil estate, where we learn how olive oil has been made in Crete for centuries — from hand-picking to cold pressing — and taste different varieties of oils, pastes, and olives straight from the grove.

We then make our way to Plaka, a charming fishing village directly opposite the small island of Spinalonga. We take a short boat ride across to explore this atmospheric islet, which was once a Venetian fortress and later a leper colony — one of the last in Europe. Its walls hold centuries of layered history, and walking through its abandoned buildings offers a moving glimpse into Crete’s more recent past.

After returning to Plaka, we enjoy a relaxed seaside lunch, then continue to either Elounda or Agios Nikolaos, two of eastern Crete’s most scenic coastal towns. The rest of the afternoon is yours to rest or take a stroll by the marina or lake.

Day 7

Minoan Glory & Urban Heritage - Knossos Palace and Heraklion

This morning, we journey westward to Knossos, the most iconic archaeological site on Crete.

Once the political and ceremonial heart of the Minoan civilization, Knossos is closely linked with myths like the Labyrinth and the Minotaur.

The palace complex, with its grand staircases, storerooms, and vibrant frescoes, gives a vivid picture of a culture that flourished over 3,500 years ago.

After Knossos, we visit the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, home to the world’s largest collection of Minoan artifacts, including the mysterious Phaistos Disc, the Snake Goddess, and original frescoes from Knossos itself.

Lunch is enjoyed at a coastal taverna near the city.

The rest of the afternoon is free for you to explore Heraklion, the capital of Crete.

Known as “Megalo Kastro” in the Venetian era, the city still carries traces of its fortified past - with stone walls, fountains, and bustling local markets.

It’s the perfect place to pick up a final keepsake or sip a coffee in one of the squares before our farewell dinner in the old town.

Day 8

Farewell to Crete - Santorini

We begin the day with a transfer to Heraklion port, where you’ll catch an early ferry to the breathtaking island of Santorini. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel, where you can check in and settle into your accommodations.

Optional: For those interested, we offer an optional Santorini highlights tour.

Our tour starts in Firostefani, where we visit the famous blue dome church with stunning views of the volcanic caldera, offering the perfect opportunity for breathtaking photos.

Next, we explore the tranquil village of Finikia, known for its picturesque and peaceful atmosphere that captures the essence of Santorini’s charm.

We then move on to Oia, the world-renowned village famous for its beautiful whitewashed houses built into volcanic rock. Here, you’ll visit the historic Venetian castle, enjoy panoramic views, and have some free time to wander through the village or relax by the caldera.

Following this, we visit Profitis Ilias, the highest point on the island, where you can take in 360° panoramic views. You’ll also explore the 300-year-old monastery at the site and sample some local delicacies made by the monks.

Our journey continues to the Black Beach, known for its unique black volcanic sand. You can swim, enjoy water sports, or have a delicious lunch overlooking the Aegean Sea.

Day 9

Santorini Sunset Cruise and famous beaches

Optional: A sailing cruise on a catamaran is the perfect way to explore the beauty of Santorini. Departing from Vlychada port, the cruise takes you to the stunning Red and White beaches, where you can admire the unique rock formations. You’ll stop at Mesa Pigadia Beach for a swim, where you can marvel at the black menir and explore the small caves. The journey then continues to the Caldera, passing through the Indian Rocks and by the Venetian Lighthouse. You’ll have the opportunity to swim in the sulfurous waters of the hot springs and snorkel near the Volcano while the crew prepares a delicious hot meal.

This activity lasts approximately 5 hours and includes pick-up and drop-off services from your hotel. Meals and drinks are provided on board, and you’ll receive instant confirmation when booking. The cruise is led by an English and Greek-speaking captain and crew, with three designated stops for swimming.

In addition to the main activity, several complimentary services are provided. These include transfers from and to your hotel, a BBQ featuring chicken fillet, fish fillet, shrimp, pasta with tomato sauce, Greek salad, and tzatziki dips, as well as soft drinks, beer, and white wine. Towels are available on board, and snorkeling and safety equipment are provided for your use.

Day 10

From Santorini to Mykonos

Your day begins with a transfer from your hotel in Santorini to the port, where you’ll catch a ferry to the vibrant island of Mykonos. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel, where you can check in and settle into your accommodations. The rest of the day is free for you to explore the island at your leisure.

Here are some suggestions for your free day in Mykonos:

Stroll through Mykonos Town (Chora): Wander through the narrow, winding streets of Mykonos Town, famous for its whitewashed buildings, colorful doors, and charming boutiques. Don’t miss the iconic windmills and the picturesque neighborhood of Little Venice, where the buildings are perched right on the water’s edge.

Visit the Beaches: Mykonos is renowned for its beautiful beaches. You can relax at one of the island’s many popular spots, such as Paradise Beach, Super Paradise Beach, or Psarou Beach. Each offers crystal-clear waters, soft sands, and a lively atmosphere with beach bars and water sports.

Explore Ano Mera: If you prefer a quieter experience, visit the traditional village of Ano Mera. Here, you can explore the historic Monastery of Panagia Tourliani, stroll through the quaint town square, and enjoy a meal at a local taverna.

Sunset at the Windmills: Head back to the famous windmills of Mykonos Town for a stunning sunset view. This is one of the best spots on the island to watch the sun dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the town and sea.

Dining and Nightlife: Mykonos is also famous for its dining and nightlife. Enjoy a delicious dinner at a seaside restaurant, where you can savor fresh seafood and traditional Greek dishes. Later, you can experience the island’s vibrant nightlife, with options ranging from stylish cocktail bars to world-renowned nightclubs.

Day 11

Mykonos - Sacred island of Delos

Today, we take advantage of our proximity to the sacred island of Delos by embarking on a cruise to this uninhabited, historically significant destination. Delos, once the center of the Athenian Alliance in 478 BC, is steeped in myth and history. According to legend, it is the birthplace of the twin gods Apollo and Artemis, making it one of the most revered sites in ancient Greek religion.

Upon arrival, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the archaeological site of Delos, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As you wander through the ruins, you’ll discover remnants of ancient temples, markets, and houses that once formed a thriving settlement. The site also offers impressive statues and mosaics that provide a glimpse into the grandeur of the past.

This unique experience allows you to connect with the natural beauty of the Aegean while reflecting on the island’s deep historical significance.

The evening is free for you to enjoy at your leisure. You can choose to relax back in Mykonos, explore more of its vibrant nightlife, or simply unwind at your hotel.

Day 12

Departure for Piraeus

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the port of Mykonos, where you’ll board a boat to Piraeus. Upon arrival at Piraeus, you will be transferred to your hotel in Athens or to Athens Airport.
