Itinerary
28 days (27 nights) Antarctic expedition from/to Ushuaia on an extraordinary route through the Weddell Sea to remote islands and along the eastern side of the Antarctic Peninsula
This expansive voyage explores one of the most remote, picturesque and wildlife-rich regions on earth: the great Weddell Sea, discovered by James Weddell in 1823.
Starting from South Georgia, you follow in the footsteps of the famous polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton and his ship Endurance. You cruise through the Weddell Sea with its amazing wildlife and huge tabular icebergs and return to Ushuaia via Elephant Island.
The continental border of the Weddell Sea is formed by huge floating ice floes. These ice floes form the breathtaking tabular icebergs and ice formations that characterize the landscape in the clearest water in the world and provide unique photo opportunities.
On the eastern side of the Weddell Sea, the chance of landing is sometimes impossible due to the ice formations. If conditions permit, Zodiac trips and possibly ice landings are undertaken.
The Weddell Sea is home to a large number of different animal species. Just a few of them are: Orcas, humpback and minke whales, leopard, Weddell and crabeater seals and various species of penguins.
During expert lectures by scientific lecturers, you will learn all about the travel area, its flora and fauna, as well as the history and political status of Antarctica. Various citizen science projects are offered on board, in which you can actively participate.
