Overview

Adventure and beauty are two words that sum up the trips in the Annapurna region. These trips explore the Annapurna Himalayas and exciting trails in the Annapurna Conservation Area. As such, the Annapurna Base Camp Budget Trek is one such trip that stretches through Gurung villages. Similarly, the trek also enjoys a surreal company of cultural heritage in the lower Annapurna Mountains. Also, this trek allows you to fully relish the display of natural beauty within a limited amount of budget.

Firstly, the Annapurna Base Camp Trek begins with your arrival in Kathmandu. Here, you explore around the valley and visit some of the UNESCO world heritage sites. Then, you will continue on a drive to head west from the valley. The road trip leads you across the Trishuli River and enjoys the view of Mt. Fish Tail (6993m) as you arrive near Pokhara. After enjoying the beauty of Pokhara, you drive further west to Phedi. This is the official starting point of the trek as heads north to Tolka. As the trek resumes in the company of lush hills, you reach the Gurung village of Chhomrong.

Then, you begin to trek across the banks of the Chhomrong River. The river takes you north and reaches Dovan. Further, you pass the Hinku Cave and settle at the Himalaya village. You continue the trek to the Machhapuchhre Base Camp (4000m) as you enjoy the vista of Mt. Fish Tail (6993m). The trails for the next part of the trek head west and reach the Annapurna Base Camp. The base camp is one of the most famous destinations in the Annapurna region and offers a great panorama of the Annapurna range. After exploring the base camp, you trek south to Jhinu Danda. Here, you can relax at the natural hot springs before heading back to Pokhara followed by Kathmandu.

Annapurna Base Camp Budget Trek is a trek with moderate difficulty. Also, trekkers with a decent physical condition can also do the trek. Similarly, the autumn and spring seasons are the best time for the trek.

Tour program

Day 1

Drive from Pokhara to Nayapul and Trek to Chhomrong (2170m) 5-6 hours.

The journey begins with a drive from Pokhara to Nayapul, a 40-kilometer trip that takes about 1.5 to 2 hours by jeep or taxi, passing through scenic landscapes of green hills and traditional villages. From Nayapul (1,070m), the trek to Chhomrong (2,170m) takes around 5-6 hours. The trail initially follows the Modi Khola river, leading to Birethanti, then ascends gradually to Syauli Bazaar, offering views of terraced fields and forests. The final section from Syauli Bazaar to Chhomrong is steeper, with stone steps and occasional suspension bridges, providing stunning vistas of Annapurna South and Machapuchare. Chhomrong is a picturesque village and a common stopover for trekkers heading to Annapurna Base Camp, with tea houses offering basic amenities and lodging. Ensure you carry essentials and have the required trekking permits.

Day 2

Trek from Chhomrong to Himalaya (2920m) 5-6 hours.

The trek from Chhomrong (2,170m) to Himalaya (2,920m) is a rewarding 5-6 hour journey, covering about 9 kilometers (5.6 miles). Starting from Chhomrong, the trail descends steeply on stone steps to the Chhomrong Khola river (1,960m) before ascending to Sinuwa (2,340m). This initial 1.5-2 hour section is challenging but offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. From Sinuwa, the trail continues through dense bamboo and rhododendron forests to Bamboo (2,310m) in another 1.5-2 hours, providing a serene trekking experience with varied flora.

After Bamboo, the path to Dovan (2,600m) involves a gradual climb through lush forests, taking about 1-1.5 hours. Here, trekkers are immersed in the tranquility of nature, with the sound of nearby rivers and occasional glimpses of wildlife. The final stretch to Himalaya requires another 1-1.5 hours of steady ascent through a mix of forested areas and open spaces, offering views of the increasingly rugged terrain and snow-capped peaks.

Throughout the trek, suspension bridges over rushing rivers add an element of adventure, and the changing landscapes—from terraced fields to dense forests—provide visual delight. Basic tea houses at Sinuwa, Bamboo, Dovan, and Himalaya offer food and lodging, making it easier to plan rest stops. The trek is notable for its elevation gain, so maintaining a steady pace helps in acclimatizing and enjoying the journey. Always check weather forecasts and ensure you have the necessary trekking permits (TIMS and ACAP) before setting out. This route is a critical segment on the way to Annapurna Base Camp, combining both natural beauty and a glimpse into the local culture.

Day 3

Trek from Himalaya to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) (4200m) 6-7 hours.

The trek from Himalaya (2,920m) to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) (4,200m) is a challenging but exhilarating journey, covering approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) in 6-7 hours. Leaving Himalaya, the trail climbs steeply through dense rhododendron and bamboo forests to Deurali (3,230m) in about 1.5 hours, where the landscape becomes more open and the vegetation begins to thin. The next section to Machapuchare Base Camp (MBC) (3,700m) takes around 2 hours and involves a steady ascent along a glacial valley, providing breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks like Machapuchare and Annapurna South.

From MBC, the final 2-2.5 hour stretch to ABC is the most dramatic, as the trail ascends through alpine meadows and glacial moraines. This segment offers stunning vistas of towering Himalayan giants and an increasingly rugged and snowy landscape. The air becomes noticeably thinner, and the temperature drops, making the climb more strenuous. As you approach ABC, the expansive views of the Annapurna massif and nearby peaks become more impressive, creating a surreal panorama of snow-covered mountains.

Annapurna Base Camp itself sits in a natural amphitheater surrounded by some of the highest peaks in the world, including Annapurna I (8,091m), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and others. The base camp provides basic amenities like tea houses for food and shelter, allowing trekkers to rest and acclimatize while taking in the awe-inspiring scenery. The sense of achievement on reaching ABC, combined with the stunning views of the Annapurna Sanctuary, makes this trek a highlight for many adventurers.

Before starting this trek, ensure you have proper acclimatization, adequate warm clothing, and essential supplies, as the altitude and weather can be challenging. Additionally, having the necessary permits (TIMS and ACAP) is crucial for the trek. This segment is not just a physical journey but an emotional and spiritual experience as you traverse one of the most beautiful regions in the Himalayas.

Day 4

Trek from Annapurna Base Camp to Bamboo (2310m) 5-6 hours.

The descent from Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) (4,200m) to Bamboo (2,310m) is a remarkable trek, covering approximately 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) in 5-6 hours. Leaving ABC, the trail initially retraces steps through the alpine meadows and glacial moraines back to Machapuchare Base Camp (MBC) (3,700m), a descent that takes about 1.5-2 hours and offers breathtaking final views of the Annapurna massif and the surrounding peaks.

From MBC, the path continues downward through increasingly vegetated terrain, passing by Deurali (3,230m) in another 1-1.5 hours. The landscape transitions from alpine to lush green valleys, and the temperature becomes warmer as you lose altitude. This descent provides a different perspective on the magnificent scenery you experienced on the way up, with opportunities to spot local flora and fauna that thrive at lower elevations.

Descending further, the trail passes through the forested regions of the Modi Khola valley, with occasional steep sections and stone steps leading to the Himalayan Hotel and then Dovan (2,600m), each section taking roughly 1 hour. The dense rhododendron and bamboo forests provide a tranquil atmosphere and the sound of rushing streams adds to the serene environment.

Finally, reaching Bamboo involves another 1-hour trek through these lush forests, where the cooler temperatures and sheltered paths offer a pleasant end to the day’s hike. Bamboo serves as a restful stop with tea houses that offer food, shelter, and a chance to relax. This descent allows trekkers to appreciate the diverse ecosystems of the Annapurna region, transitioning from high-altitude glacial landscapes to rich, green valleys and forests.

Ensure you trek at a comfortable pace to avoid strain on your knees, and stay hydrated. While descending, take time to enjoy the shifting scenery and reflect on the incredible journey from the high-altitude sanctuary of ABC to the verdant valley of Bamboo.

Day 5

Trek from Bamboo to Jhinudanda (Hot Spring) (1750m) 5-6 hours.

The trek from Bamboo (2,310m) to Jhinudanda (1,750m) covers about 8 kilometers (5 miles) and takes approximately 5-6 hours. Leaving Bamboo, the trail ascends gently through dense bamboo and rhododendron forests for about 1.5 hours until reaching Sinuwa (2,340m). The path then involves a steep descent of stone steps to the Chhomrong Khola river (1,960m) for around 1-1.5 hours, followed by a challenging climb to Chhomrong (2,170m) in another 1.5 hours.

From Chhomrong, the trail descends steeply again for about 1-1.5 hours through terraced fields and forests to reach Jhinudanda (1,750m). Jhinudanda is known for its relaxing natural hot springs, located about a 20-minute downhill walk from the village. These hot springs provide a perfect way to soothe sore muscles and unwind after the trek, with warm, mineral-rich waters in a tranquil riverside setting.

Enjoy the changing landscapes as you transition from high-altitude forests to warmer valleys, and take time to relax and rejuvenate in the hot springs at Jhinudanda.

Day 6

Trek from Jhinudanda (Hot Spring) to Pokhara Via Nayapul 6-7 hours.

The trek from Jhinudanda (1,750m) to Pokhara via Nayapul is a picturesque journey spanning approximately 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) of trekking and a 40-kilometer (25 miles) car ride. Starting from Jhinudanda, the trail descends through lush forests and terraced fields, passing by charming villages like New Bridge, Kyumi, and Syauli Bazaar. Along the way, trekkers cross several suspension bridges over rivers and streams, adding an adventurous touch to the trek.

After reaching Nayapul, trekkers board a jeep or taxi for a 1.5-2 hour drive to Pokhara. The road winds through scenic countryside, offering glimpses of rural life and panoramic views of the surrounding hills. This segment of the journey provides a smooth transition from the tranquility of the mountains to the bustling city life of Pokhara. Trekkers can reflect on their trekking experiences while enjoying the comfort of the vehicle and the changing landscapes outside. Upon reaching Pokhara, the journey concludes at Lakeside, the vibrant tourist area known for its lakeside promenade, restaurants, and shops. Overall, this trek and drive combination offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and convenience as trekkers return to civilization.

Physical Fitness:

Many people have questions as to what level of physical fitness is required for trekking in Nepal and that is extremely reliant on what activity the visitor is engaging in Nepal  With that said, for a standard easy trek to Extreme hard level of trekking. The daily activity (trek) would be 5-6 hours,(depend on the trekking trail) and elevation will generally not exceed 5,600 meters like Everest Base Camp, Throng la passes, Chola passes treks and other passes or Base Camp but some of them are less than 4000m. The trekking day is involving both long steep climbs, and descents with a variety of terrain underfoot from well-trodden paths, to rocks covered with ice or snow, depending on the season. Mostly a day would include a number of climbs or descents of 600 meters more or less, starting after the early morning breakfast, resting at a lunch place in the afternoon, then continuous trekking until arriving at the teahouse.

In preparation for the trekking in Nepal, it is important, to begin with, the basic training requirement at least 2 months before departing for trekking in Nepal. Two to three hours of aerobic exercise like running, walking, swimming, cycling & some gym work per week is the minimum and most will find it beneficial to add some basic strength training to their physical fitness routine required for the hard trekking and for normal and easy trek just have some physical fitness is enough. One of the best ways to prepare is to take practice hikes with a daypack roughly the same weight as what you will be taking during the trek. Your calf should be enough fit and prepare for trekking. Mostly during the trekking calf paining or tired is the main issue. Do this only after a baseline of fitness has been reached. Moving fast is not our goal, will provide a more enjoyable and safe adventure trekking in Nepal for all easy and hard level.

Trekking Seasons in Nepal:

There are main two seasons in which Nepal where the most amount of visitors visit. (September, October & November) being the most popular season which is also called the peak season in Nepal, and spring (March, April & May) coming in close behind which is also called the mini-season in Nepal. The summer months of June, July, and August are the monsoon season and most of the time raining as such the trails are mostly washed out sometimes, and roads can sometimes be impassible due to landslide activates. Nevertheless, you can trek to rain-shadow regions like Upper Dolpo and Upper Mustang during the monsoon seasons. Nepal is a suitable destination for all seasons.

Winter is very dry & extremely cold and all the high passes become inaccessible due to ice and snow conditions. The temperature doesn’t usually fluctuate during the day time temperature is around 20-25 degrees. However, you gain the altitude the temperature decreases. The temperature can drop to around 0 to -25 degrees at night when staying at tented camps in Himalayan regions. Winter trek in higher altitudes is not advised due to the danger of avalanches and also altitude sickness. Although some may enjoy the sight of the snow-covered mountains as you reach your destination.  However, the temperature does not change as much in lower mountain regions the nights are slightly colder than days’ time.

Autumn &Spring is the best timing for trekking in Nepal because the weather is generally warm and dry, and flowers are in bloom in the lower elevations of the country on the same time you can see the many festivals during that period.

Trekking Day:

A typical trekking day begins with the early morning breakfast around 7 am in the hotel. (Depend on the trekking region). It would advise you to pack your trekking gears in a duffle bag and essential supplies in your day pack after having breakfast; we begin the trek and head along the trail at around 8 am. The morning walk is more energetics to be longer as we begin with refreshed bodies and enthusiasm.  A good morning’s walk, we make a stop for lunch at around 11-12 pm. The lunch involves group meals enjoying the vicinity around the stop & enjoys the organic & local food in the mountain. After resting for about an hour or two, we resume our trek to reach teahouse or camp by 2-3 pm. The afternoon walk is relatively shorter and can involve games and side trips as organized by the trekking experienced guides. You also can enjoy breaks during the trek to relax, read, and stroll around the area or doing yoga. You can explore with the local people and observe their lifestyle & culture. Dinner is served around 7-8 in the evening to round off the day.

Meals and Accommodations:

During the trekking period, the accommodation is commonly referred to as teahouses. These are family-run basic lodges that fill the role of the restaurant, Dining hall, and boarding house for tourists. Now a day’s electricity can be found in the rooms, which mean one light bulb, and one or two outlets for charging electronics. The common areas are also lit by electricity. Alternatively, teahouses may also use solar, hydroelectric, or have electrical lines running into the village, so the commonality and availability of electricity may vary. Still, a few of the trekking route electricity service is not available. Use the local traditional kerosene light.

Most of the teahouses have private rooms, though if the trek is in a more remote or high altitude place there are limited teahouses so season time dormitories are the norm. Most of the room has 2 single beds with basic bedding, and the bathroom is shared. Some of the places we can get the private bathroom also with a mix of western and squat style toilets in the bathrooms.

Breakfast and dinner are taken at the same teahouses and these lodges have large family style dining rooms centered on a stove or coal to provide heat basically in mountain areas. Most of the areas menu will have Nepali style western foods such as Pancake, pizza, Burger, fries, etc. Also on the menu is the traditional Nepali food Dal Bhat meal. This is a lentil soup with rice, vegetable, Pickle, or meat curry. Most menus will also offer a smattering of local cuisine.

Internal Flight Delays:

Nepal is an incredible and beautiful country of mixed of the White Mountains, deep valleys, Landscape, rivers, and green rolling hills. With this incredible diversity of landscapes, road travel can be extremely time consuming and flights within Nepal to reach popular trekking destinations is the easiest way. Not all the trekking destination has flight service, so road transportation is the only option. Mountainous terrain also comes with the possibility of in-climate weather. It mentions the incredibly high number of visitors during peak seasons makes internal flight delays a genuine possibility. To manage this situation, it may be helpful to have a few extras days on either end of your tour. If any cancellations or flight delays do occur (high chances of flight delays from around Kathmandu to Lukla, Everest region, Pokhara to Jomsom, Annapurna region), we also provide services to arrange chopper on the last stage to help you to be on your schedule on the premises of Civil Aviation Rules in Nepal which state that helicopters can fly if the visibility is 1500m. The cost ranges from USD400 to USD650 according to the number of passengers. The payment can be made either to the helicopter company or to us directly and can be made either by cash or using a credit card. It will be beneficial to purchase and review your insurance, the insurance companies may cover some of the alternative measures of travel. Flight insurance may cover changing your international flight if it is necessary.

Travel Insurance:

Most expeditions, Adventurous trekking, and tours require that travel insurance and it is purchased prior to arriving in Nepal, but other normal treks and tours may not require. However, travel insurance is definitely an important consideration. There are a number of reasons to consider insurance. Firstly, it may be required, so check to see what is being asked for by the company. Second, Nepal is a landlocked country, and there are only a few direct flights. Travel in and out from country can encounter some disruptions if purchasing insurance, make sure flight delays and cancellations also included. Always choose insurance that, though every safeguard is in place during your Holiday, there are always extenuating circumstances that may result in an accident during trekking & tours. Read carefully printout of insurance policies to ensure that the trekking or any other activity you are engaging in is covered or not, as some policies have stopped covering trekking in certain places. If you are going above 5000 m or high always mention the policies so it’s cover the chopper service in the last condition. It is very important that if you have the comfort of good insurance, so do the research and choose carefully which makes your trip relaxing and joyful.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS):

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is usually seen in un-acclimatized people shortly after ascent to high altitudes. The condition occurs due to the thinning of air as the altitude increases. The condition, if not taken seriously and treated immediately, can be life-threatening and its symptoms can be seen generally above 3200 meters. The symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness are nausea, vomiting, tiredness, shortness of breath, and cerebral pain. The itineraries are designed to properly acclimatize you to the change in high altitude climate and sufficient precautionary measures too are taken to take utmost caution for our valuable guests. Our staff also equipped with cell phones and satellite phones (Option) in the occurrence of any emergency cases. Drinking-Water:

Water is essential for life, and clean water is imperative while on holiday. When visiting the less developed countries like Nepal it is a concern that all travelers should consider. There are few options when trekking or traveling in Nepal that will mitigate any chances of drinking contaminated water. The first consideration to take into account is that tap water should not be ingested. That even means when brushing your teeth in an urban area. Most will choose to buy bottled water and if doing so make sure the cap has sealed properly. Plastic bottle reuse is a big problem, and with that being said there are other options on the market to assist in making water drinkable. Mountain spring water is drinkable but if you use the purified tablet. The conservation area project also sells this tablet most of the trekking area. A guide will assist you to find out it also.
