The starting point of this cycle tour is Villach, situated on the edge of the Klagenfurt basin, where the Drau and Gail rivers meet. Soon, however, it is time to say goodbye to Austria again before the cycle tour continues in Italy. The Friuli-Venezia Giulia region not only offers a variety of landscapes, but also invites you to explore the cultural diversity of the region. This mix of cultures is also reflected in the cuisine: Alpine-Austrian, Slovenian and Venetian influences characterize the region's gastronomic offerings. Leaving the peaks of the Carnic Alps far behind you, you cycle along the southern side of the Alps towards the sea, with the coast of the Adriatic stretching out before you with miles of sandy beaches. All those who cycle on to Trieste, the former Habsburg city, treat themselves to a "lazy day" in Grado, one of Italy's most popular seaside resorts,

Tour program

Day 1

Arrival in Villach

Individual arrival at the starting hotel in Villach. Parking available near the hotel.
Following the River Gail, you leave Villach behind you and soon say goodbye to Austria and hello to Italy. In the border triangle of Italy, Austria and Slovenia lies the Canal Valley, with the Italian border town of Tarvisio at its center. Austrians, Slovenes, Friulians and Italians have lived together here for centuries and all three major European language families - Germanic, Romanic and Slavic - meet here directly.
Tarvisio, a small town - surrounded by wide valleys and forests - in a modern guise, with an old soul and full of traditions, is the starting point of your cycle tour today. It is not only one of the most important mountain resorts in Friuli Venezia Giulia, but also one of the region's ski strongholds. Continuing through the Kanaltal valley, you can admire the beauty of the Friulian Alpine region from the saddle, with its unspoiled, untouched nature and extensive forests.
Located at the southern end of the Canal Valley and at the foothills of the Julian Alps, Gemona del Friuli is considered one of the most beautiful historic towns in Friuli Venezia Giulia. The townscape is dominated by the majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, which is certainly worth a visit. Today's stage is dominated by wine. Hills full of vines line your route and invite you to sample a drop or two. Udine, which is characterized by Venetian influences, radiates peace and tranquillity; you can admire important late Gothic and Renaissance buildings over a coffee in the "Piazza" or during a stroll through the city centre.
Accompanied by the Scirocco breeze, you glide past reed landscapes and water channels and arrive in Grado, a historic fishing town and one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Adriatic.
You are spoiled for choice: either an exciting day of sightseeing in Aquileia in the footsteps of the Romans or a day of swimming by the sea. Today you have the opportunity to discover the secrets of the Roman city of Aquileia, the so-called "Second Rome"; Roman ruined cities, ancient churches and secluded landscapes on the edge of the lagoon await you. Or would you prefer to enjoy the warm rays of sunshine on a sun lounger on one of the miles of sandy beaches?
The rugged Karst accompanies you through the hinterland on the way to the Adriatic Sea. Following a breathtakingly beautiful coastal area, you cycle towards your destination. Miramare Castle invites you to pay a final visit before you enter the former Habsburg city of Trieste. The old port and trading city is a worthy conclusion to this cycle tour. If you wish, you can shorten the stage from Monfalcone by train (ticket not included in the price).
Individual departure or option to extend your stay at the Adriatic Sea.
