Jenseits der Gipfel: Patagonien im Detail

Early in the morning, we’ll board the bus to El Chaltén, a scenic journey of approximately three hours. Along the way, we’ll travel past Lake Argentino and Lake Viedma, with stunning views of the glacier and surrounding landscapes.

As we approach the mountains, Mount Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre come into view—two iconic peaks that define the region’s dramatic skyline. Throughout the drive, you’ll be immersed in the unique flora, fauna, and geography of this remote corner of Patagonia.

We’ll make a brief stop at La Leona Roadhouse, a historic site where explorer Francisco Moreno survived an attack by a puma. Here, you’ll have 15 minutes to visit the small museum, grab a coffee, and enjoy the rustic atmosphere.

Upon arrival in El Chaltén, the rest of the afternoon is free to explore this charming mountain village, known as the trekking capital of Argentina.

We begin the day leaving El Chaltén toward Río Eléctrico, the starting point of one of Patagonia’s most iconic hikes. Along the drive, we’ll make brief stops at panoramic viewpoints, while the guide shares insights about the region’s natural and cultural history.

The hike begins following the Blanco River through native forests of lenga and ñire trees. After about an hour of trekking, we’ll reach the Piedras Blancas Glacier Viewpoint, where we’ll enjoy a stunning frontal view of this hanging glacier nestled in the mountains.

We continue toward the Poincenot campsite, located at the base of Mount Fitz Roy. From here, those who wish can take on the final ascent: a challenging 300-meter climb (approximately 90 minutes round-trip) that leads to the iconic Laguna de los Tres. Facing the central wall of Fitz Roy, this viewpoint offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic vistas in the region.

After taking in the landscape, we’ll enjoy a packed lunch to recharge. For those who still feel energized, there's the option to walk a bit further to Laguna Sucia Viewpoint, from where you’ll see both Laguna de los Tres and Laguna Sucia—a truly unforgettable sight.

We then begin our descent, passing by Laguna Capri and the Estancia Madsen Viewpoint, returning to El Chaltén around 5:00 p.m

Today, the rest of the day is free for you to enjoy El Chaltén at your own pace. We recommend hiking the Cerro Torre Trail, one of the most iconic treks in the area.

The trail winds through native beech forests, peat bogs, and shrublands, leading to the beautiful Laguna Torre. This glacial lagoon, framed by moraines, features Glaciar Grande calving into its western side. It’s common to see small icebergs floating near the shore, pushed by the wind.

Towering above the scene is the dramatic Cerro Torre massif, with its slender 3,128-meter peak, flanked by the rugged Adela Range—creating one of Patagonia’s most breathtaking views.

In the afternoon, we return to El Chaltén following the same trail.

We can take advantage of this free morning to explore the town of El Chaltén, visit its charming chapel, or take an optional excursion to Lago del Desierto—a remote and scenic lake known both for its natural beauty and for being the site of a historic border dispute between Argentina and Chile.

In the afternoon, we board our bus back to El Calafate, traveling once again through the stunning Patagonian landscapes.

We dedicate this day to one of the World’s Natural Wonder: the Moreno glacier. This ice field- type glacier flows down from the Patagonian Icefield, a big sheet of ice that with its 22.000 square kilometers is the third largest glacier area in the world, after Antarctica (14 M sq km) and Greenland (1 M sq km). Because unusual favorable local conditions, this glacier is the only one in the world that shows a closure and rupture process. The road leads to the very front of the glacier, which will be only meters away from your eyes. The roar of the chunks of ice falling inside the glacier or from the glacier into the lake, the frequent collapse of the front seracs into the turquoise water, makes out of this day a very special and unique experience. Then we will take a boat trip to see incredible views of the south face of Perito Moreno glacier. Then we go back to our hotel.

After breakfast, we transfer to the bus terminal to take our bus to Puerto Natales, Chile.

Today, we’ll cross the majestic Andes Mountain Range and travel through the vast Patagonian steppe, enjoying ever-changing landscapes along the way.

Upon arrival in Puerto Natales, a transfer will take us to the hotel.

The rest of the afternoon is at leisure to relax or begin exploring this charming town on the shores of Seno Última Esperanza.

Early morning, we will leave Puerto Natales to travel to Torres Del Paine (90 minutes approximately) through a spectacular road that cross the Patagonia steppe. We will enter to this world famous National Park, that was declared Humanity Heritage by the UNESCO, and we will begin to go round this amazing area, taking all the photos that we want. We will admire the panoramic views of this Park, such as the Nordenskjöld Lake, The Salto Grande and the “Cuernos del Paine” Paine ́s horns. Finally, we will visit the Grey Lake viewpoint and we will return to Puerto Natales by dawn.

After breakfast, the rest of the day is free to explore Puerto Natales at your own pace.

We recommend taking the optional Balmaceda & Serrano Navigation, a full-day boat excursion through the stunning Última Esperanza Fjord. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of majestic mountains, hanging glaciers, and a variety of Patagonian birdlife. This remote area of Bernardo O’Higgins National Park is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular regions in southern Chile.

Alternatively, you can opt for a horseback ride at Cerro Dorotea, a great way to experience the local gaucho culture and enjoy panoramic views, or take a light hike on Cerro Benítez, a scenic trail known for its chance to spot majestic Andean condors in flight.

In the afternoon we take the bus to Punta Arenas where we will spend the night.

Early in the morning, we leave our accommodation in Punta Arenas and board the bus to our next destination: Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world.

Although it’s a long journey, it offers a unique opportunity to connect Chilean and Argentine Patagonia by land, without the need for a flight. Along the way, we’ll witness vast and dramatic landscapes, cross the legendary Magellan Strait, and travel through remote southern territories.

Upon arrival at Ushuaia’s bus terminal, a transfer will be waiting to take us to our hotel.

After breakfast, we walk on our own to the tourist pier to embark on a boat trip through the legendary Beagle Channel.

We’ll sail past Alicia Island, home to a colony of sea lions, and continue to the Island of Birds, where we can observe cormorants in their natural habitat. The journey also includes a visit to the historic Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse, built in 1919, an iconic symbol of this southern region.

On the way back to port, we’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Darwin Mountain Range to the west and the Andes rising above Ushuaia.

The afternoon is at leisure to explore the city on your own—visit its museums, local shops, or simply relax by the waterfront.

Around 08:30 AM, we’ll pick you up from your hotel to begin our visit to Tierra del Fuego National Park, located just 12 km from downtown Ushuaia.

Before entering the park, we’ll board the legendary End of the World Train, which follows the historic route once used by prisoners in Ushuaia. This short but scenic ride winds through stunning landscapes of forest, rivers, and peat bogs, offering a glimpse into the region’s past and natural beauty.

Once inside the park, we head to Ensenada Bay—where the Andes, the sub-Antarctic forest, and the sea meet in one unforgettable place. This was once home to native peoples, and traces of their presence remain. Here you’ll also find the southernmost post office in the world, where you might get the chance to send a postcard from the edge of the continent. (Note: Ensenada Bay is closed during winter months.)

We’ll continue on to other panoramic points and take short walks to appreciate the rich flora and fauna of this pristine environment. Highlights include Acigami Lake (formerly Lake Roca), shared with Chile, and Lapataia Bay, the official end point of the Pan-American Highway, which stretches all the way from Alaska.

After a full morning immersed in nature and history, we return to our hotel in Ushuaia.
