Itinerary

Standing taller than a football field is long, the ancient redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) of California's North Coast can live 2,000+ years. Ride and hike through three different reserves guarded by these amazing sentinels, including the world’s largest remaining old-growth forest. Explore coastal gold-rush provision towns and Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Thrill to the only section of California’s coastline without a major highway - a magical stretch called the Lost Coast.

Program zájezdu

Den 1

Meet in Eureka. Ride the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway through old-growth redwoods that top 250+ feet.

Meet us in Eureka (we found it!). After a short one-hour shuttle north, we begin cycling on the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway through the mammoth redwoods of Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. After lunch we get “up close and personal” with some hiking in the redwood forest. “Listen” to the silence here! Crane your neck at Big Tree, standing over 300 feet tall. It measures 21 feet in diameter and just keeps on growing past its estimated 1,500 years. Stay in Eureka tonight.

Cycle 10.5 mi +721 ft. / -984 ft.

Den 2

Shuttle back up the coast to ride a scenic drive through Trinidad before heading inland on pastoral farm roads.

Shuttle back up the coast after breakfast to begin riding among the lush ferns and mosses at Patrick’s Point overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Cycle the scenic drive through Trinidad before heading inland on pastoral farm roads. Pause for lunch in Arcata, a one-time gold-rush provisioning stop on the shores of Humboldt Bay and now home to Humboldt State University. Ride out to the North Jetty and relax in the sea breeze or use the extra time exploring Eureka in the afternoon. The entire town is a state historic landmark, with hundreds of Victorian homes. Enjoy the Old Town neighborhood with its charming cafes, bookstores and window shopping. Stay at the Carter House tonight.

Cycle 26.7 mi. +679 ft. / -903 ft.

Den 3

Kayak Humboldt Bay, then ride the South Jetty on to Ferndale.

Kayak Humboldt Bay, one of California’s most pristine wetlands and home to over 316 bird species. After a quick lesson, paddle through archaeological sites, an egret rookery and windswept Cypress trees. After lunch, continue on to historic Ferndale, which posed as the ideal 1950s town for Jim Carrey's movie The Majestic. Enjoy your room at the Victorian Village Inn, which National Geographic Traveler calls'...one of the world's top ten great places.'

Cycle 32.8 mi. +932 ft. / -887 ft.

Den 4

Ride Panther Gap and the Lost Coast: spectacular panoramas of rugged outcrops and black sand beaches. Up for a real challenge? Ride 'The Wall.'

Ride from the “Lost Coast” over Panther Gap and through the Bull Creek Redwoods. The wild and rugged Lost Coast is the only section of California's coastline that doesn't have a major highway. Despite some rough sections of road on today’s route, this is an unforgettable ride you won’t want to miss! Begin cycling along shimmering blue waters and utterly deserted beaches. Along here, it’s not hard to imagine the relatively undisturbed California coast of a century ago – essentially, you are looking at it! Eventually the road veers inland following a remote river valley that feels likewise “lost in time.” After about 25 miles the grade kicks up dramatically as you begin the 2500’ ascent to Panther Gap – the summit for today’s ride. Or you can choose to do like many folks and opt for a scenic and relaxing boost over the pass in the van instead. Whichever method of transportation you choose, dizzying views over the Pacific Ocean and redwood forests await. After the descent, pedal a quiet road through the massive redwoods of Bull Creek. Shuttle back to Ferndale for a second night at the Victorian Inn.

Cycle 47.1 mi. +5015 ft. / -4894 ft. (or skip the big climb!)

Den 5

Cycle through Humboldt Redwoods State Park today. Meet the Coast Redwoods of the aptly-named Avenue of the Giants. Pedal between the roots of a giant living redwood tree.

Ride through Humboldt Redwoods State Park. Pedal along the banks of the Eel River through ancient redwood forest along the Avenue of the Giants. These magnificent Coast Redwoods can live more than 2,000 years and are the tallest living things on earth, reaching heights of more than 350 feet - taller than a football field is long! Ride your bike through a giant space between the roots of a living redwood. Options today range up to 50+ miles, if you'd like to do them. Tonight: Stay at the historic Benbow Inn.

Cycle 42.6 mi. +2397 ft. / -2139 ft.

Den 6

Explore Bull Creek in Humboldt Redwoods State Park, the largest remaining old-growth redwood forest in the world.

Slow down and wind down with a hike along Bull Creek in Humboldt Redwoods State Park. Savor the quiet serenity of the forest primeval – the largest old-growth redwood forest remaining in the world! Wander through cathedral-like groves for a last lingering look at these majestic trees, then shuttle back to Eureka for your trip home.

Ubytování

Our regional expertise, a constant re-evaluation of last year's inns, and a continuing search for the best experience ensure that our lodging is always among the finest the area has to offer. By limiting the number of guests on each trip, we expand our choices and are able to fit into some smaller, award-winning bed and breakfasts and country inns that wouldn't be able to accommodate a larger group.

Lodging is based upon two people sharing a room with a private bath. If you're traveling solo on any of our trips and you're open to sharing a room with another solo traveler of the same gender, you pay 50% of the single supplement fee up front. If we are able to assign you a roommate, that fee is refunded to you. You can guarantee a private room and bath if you pay the full Single Supplement Fee. Occasionally, a room with two beds consists of one bed plus a rollaway bed or sofa bed. Call our office to see if this is applicable to the trip and date you select.

Doprava

You are welcome to ride in the van at any time - no explanation required. Some want a lift for just a few miles; others have ridden in the van for the entire trip. It's your vacation - you decide.

We use a fleet of specially ordered and customized 15-passenger vans. Most have a seven-liter V-10 engine, high rear axle ratio, and heavy-duty trailer towing package for efficiently moving a van full of people pulling a large trailer full of luggage and food. Each van also has heavy-duty professional bicycle racks on top of a custom-made, steelwork platform on the roof.

Pojištění

Pojištění není v ceně. Pro tento zájezd je nutné cestovní pojištění. Ujistěte se prosím, že jste dostatečně pokryti.
