Day 2

Discover Lima as a local (City & Culinary)

This fascinating walking tour will help you gain a little insight into the local Limeño culture and history. After being picked up from your hotel at 9 am, the taxi will take you to the Miraflores market, where Peruvian merchants will enlighten you on the local produce and outline the different types of potatoes, corn and fruits that can be found in Peru. Feel free to grab some samples and don't forget to try the coca leaves! Following a short meander through the market, you will then hop on the public bus 'Metropolitano' to the historic center, where you can admire grand colonial buildings.

The Historic Center of Lima has been the seat of the Colonial and Republican governments since the Spanish foundation of the city in 1535 and is also an important indigenous center. Until the 1940s, it also housed Peru's richest and most influential families. As you stroll through the city center, pay attention to the changing style of architecture and the beautiful interior balconies. Upon arriving to Plaza San Martin, you will taste some delicious Peruvian pastries before heading to the main square. There, you will stop by a small outlet of the ChocoMuseum and will receive fun facts and information about the process of transforming the cocoa bean into the delicious chocolate that you will be savoring. Following this tasty treat, the tour will proceed to the Cordano Bar, where you will taste a typical Peruvian drink, the Chicha Morada, made from sweet purple corn. From here, you can either grab the Metropolitano bus back to Miraflores or you are welcome to stay in the historic center to continue exploring on your own terms.

Meals - Breakfast.

Day 3

Ancient Ica awaits

At midday, you will take a transfer from your hotel to the bus station, from where you will board a Cruz del Sur bus and travel in comfort to the desert city of Ica. Upon arrival in Ica at the end of the day, you will be transferred to your hotel.

Situated on Peru’s Pacific arid desert coastline, this region boasts an interesting mix of ancient local culture, spectacular natural beauty, and adrenaline-inducing adventure sports that will sure give you a thrill and captivate you! Be warned, it is impossible to escape the sand!

The first settlers arrived in the area over 10,000 years ago and from these ancestral people the cultures of the Nazca, Ica and Paracas were born. The region’s ancient tribes wove ornate robes, developed elaborate ceramic skills, mummified their dead and carved gigantic figures and geometries into the desert floor. General San Martín commanded the Peruvian War of Independence from this area and directed military operations against Spanish forces from the town of Pisco.

Meals - Breakfast.

Day 4

Idle on Peru’s Galapagos Islands

Take an early morning transfer from your hotel in Ica to the port of Paracas. Known to many as the "poor man’s Galapagos", these small islands are nonetheless spectacular in their own right and well worth visiting. These idyllic islands form part of a National Reserve where you can see sea lions, seals, penguins, guano birds and turtles, a rarity at this latitude. On the boat trip out to the islands, you will undoubtedly spot the famous “Candelabro” (candlestick), an ancient marking traced in the hillside back on the mainland. It is at least 50 meters long and believed to be linked to the Nazca Lines.

In the afternoon, you can do an optional tour which will take you to explore the high dunes around Ica. The dunes surrounding Ica and Huacachina are some of the finest in the world for sand boarding and buggying. Some of the dunes rise to almost 100m in height, and roaring over them in a powerful dune buggy not only gets the heart racing but is a great way to experience the area.

At around 7 pm, you will be picked up at your hotel and transferred to the bus station. From here you will take a bus 2.5hr to Nazca.

Meals - Breakfast.

Day 5

Be wowed by the mythical Nazca Lines

Discovered entirely by accident in 1927, the Nazca Lines are ancient geoglyphs in the Nazca desert in southern Peru. With the larger etchings stretching for several miles, they were designated a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1994. The Nazca Lines are one of the main attractions for visitors to this part of the country and a trip in an airplane above these hypnotizing markings is an unmissable part of any visit to Peru.

If you feel like doing an optional excursion, there are two to choose from. For a flight over the Nazca lines, we recommend that you go in the morning, as the winds pick up in the afternoon. Alternatively, in the afternoon you can visit the Chauchilla Cemetery, where the remains of some of the most important people of the Pre-Inca period and the Inca civilization can be found. You will also discover ancient ceramics, skulls, and primitive artifacts that remain practically untouched to this day.

After your dinner (not included), you will take a transfer to the bus station for your luxury overnight sleeper bus to Arequipa, where you will arrive the next morning.

Meals - Breakfast.

Day 6

Discover “The White City” of Arequipa

Welcome to Arequipa, a city surrounded by the rolling green campiña and the  El Misti, Chachani and Pichu Pichu volcanoes that tower gloriously above it. Arequipa, nicknamed “La Ciudad Blanca”, or The White City, is one of Peru’s most stunning cities, and one where the sun shines all year round.

Arequipa rivals Cusco for the title of Peru’s second most important city. With famous people such as the Nobel Prize Winner for Literature Mario Vargas Llosa among its citizens, as well as arguably the most delicious cuisine in Peru, this city has a lot to be proud of. If you don’t believe us, just try a “rocoto relleno” or “chupe de camerones” washed down with a shot of anisado!

You will have the day to rest and explore Arequipa. We will give you a guidebook so you can take a walking tour of the city, with four different routes full of local tips.

Meals - None.

Day 7

Onwards to the breathtaking Colca Canyon

After an early breakfast in Arequipa, today involves traveling almost 100 miles where your journey will take you up a further 6562 ft. above sea level. As you leave Arequipa, it will not be long before you get an idea of the range of landscapes ahead of you. The huge El Misti Volcano, flanked by the third largest volcano, the Chachani Volcano and the Pichu Pichu Volcano is quite the leaving party as you bid farewell to the White City.

The beginning of the journey to the Colca Canyon is dotted with small traditional villages where you can see the brightly colored clothing typical of this region. The road then keeps going up and up and up some more! You will stop for a short break at a traditional Andean community where we recommend that you drink some mate de coca (tea made with coca leaves) that helps to fight the symptoms of altitude sickness. Entering the altiplano, you will be treated to views of serene lakes with migrant birds and llamas, alpacas, guanacos and vicuñas wandering through the Peruvian Andes. After this amazing trip, you will arrive in the friendly town of Chivay where you can buy some snacks and drinks and walk around a bit before continuing to the town of Coporaque. Due to the altitude of Chivay at almost 12,000ft. above sea level, it is important that you drink a lot of water and take it easy. Luckily for you, the beautiful scenery and fresh air makes just sitting on a rock and admiring your surroundings, an enjoyable activity in itself.  Once in Coporaque, you will visit the Lodge "La Casa de Mamayacchi", where you will have free time to have lunch (not included). After lunch, your guide will invite you for a short walk through Coporaque and its surroundings. This walk takes around 1 hour and is optional.

Then, you will return to the vehicle and go to the natural "hot springs", where you will enjoy a relaxing bath (entrance fee and personal towels are not included). Finally, you will soon arrive at your accommodation where the rest of the afternoon and evening is free to spend at your leisure.

Meals - Breakfast.

Day 8

Condor spotting in the Colca Canyon

Leaving early in the morning, you will head to the famous El Mirador (the Lookout) at Cruz del Condor. Situated high on a cliff at the deepest point of the canyon, which in itself is cavernous and is twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the United States, the Cruz del Condor offers fantastic views of both the canyon and the immense Andean Condors flying over the abyss below. With the largest wingspan of any land bird, as well as being one of the world´s longest-living birds, the Inca’s believed the Andean Condors to be immortal. The Condors are generally at their most active in the morning, so the earlier you get there, the more likely you are to see them and have this magical moment to yourself with fewer people around.

It is then time to hit the road again as you make your way to the town of Puno at Lake Titicaca. On the way, you will stop at the traditional village of Pinchollo and the Andean community of Maca, where you will be able to explore some of the local handicrafts and soak up some more valley views. You will then continue along the winding roads before reaching the small village of Yanque, which has one of the most beautiful churches in all of the Colca Valley.

Your journey to Puno will take you right across the endless highland plains where you will be treated to stunning views of Peru's diverse landscape. Upon arrival to Puno, the rest of the evening is free to spend at your leisure and you can go to sleep dreaming about what lies ahead in the next part of your Peruvian adventure.

Meals - Breakfast.

Day 9

Lake Titicaca awaits you

Straddling the border between Peru and Bolivia in the Andes Mountains, is one of South America's largest lakes and the world's highest navigable body of water. Said to be the birthplace of the Incas, it is home to numerous ruins and islands where tradition remains. Today's excursion will allow you to experience the lake and its inhabitants. You will be picked up from your hotel at around 7 am and will be transferred to the port so you can board a motorboat (11km/h) that will take you to Taquile Island. But first, after 25 minutes, you will arrive at the floating islands, inhabited by the legendary Uros, fishermen who have made the use of totora reeds a way of life. You will see their houses and receive an explanation on how they build these floating islands.

Then, after a pleasant boat ride of 2 hours and 30 minutes, you will arrive at Taquile Island, where slowly you'll ascend to the town on a gentle hike that takes about 50 minutes. There, you'll observe a native community that conserves ancestral forms and where men are skilled weavers. You will have lunch (not included) and afterwards, you will go down to the west side of the island on a stairway, affording spectacular views. Finally, you'll take a 2 hours and 30 minutes boat ride back to Puno.

Meals - Breakfast.

Day 10

Head to Cusco, the capital of the Inca empire

Early pick up from your hotel. Leaving Puno and Lake Titicaca behind, you'll start your journey on a comfortable tourist bus that will take you to Cusco. The drive is approximately 10.5 hours long, and along the way, you will stop off at some of the country’s most beautiful locations. At the once great pre-Hispanic city of Pukara, characterized by its huge pyramids, you will visit the litic Museum, where you can admire several from this ancient period. The village is also known for its traditional ceramics, called “Torito de Pukara”. Your tour of Pukara which will last around 35 minutes, after which you will board the bus and head towards your next stop, La Raya. At 4,335m, this marks the highest point of the journey, and afterward, you will continue to the fascinating archaeological complex of Raqchi. Be amazed by the monumental size of Raqchi and its temple, which has walls that are almost 49ft (15m) high, a unique site for the Inca Empire. Our last stop before we arrive in Cusco is Andahuaylillas, a charming 16th Century village whose beautiful main square is home to the Church of San Pedro de Andahuaylillas, the pride of the town and its people. Cusco is located 25 minutes away from here.

The puma shaped “Navel of the World,” as its proud inhabitants call it, Cusco was the center of the Inca universe. When the Spanish arrived, they tried but failed, to quash the city by constructing extravagant colonial buildings on top of important Inca sites. This has left an interesting mix of architecture, with remains of Inca walls blending in with elaborate churches and red tiled roofs. We think you will agree when we say that Cusco city center is truly a place of beauty.

Meals - Breakfast.

Day 11

Discover the Sacred Valley of the Inca

Your guide will pick you up to explore the Sacred Valley on a group tour, where you'll stop in Pisac and visit its famed artisans' and antiques market which is considered to be one of Peru's liveliest. After exploring Pisac's market you'll visit the Inca ruins above the town which offer spectacular views over the Urubamba River, agricultural terraces and intricate Inca waterworks.

Continuing your journey through the Sacred Valley you'll reach a local restaurant situated on the banks of the Urubamba River where you'll stop to have a traditional Andean lunch. The restaurant offers delicious local dishes as well as a view of the Urubamba River which is the sacred river of the Sacred Valley.

Following lunch, your guide will take you to the impressive Inca ruins of Ollantaytambo, where the Inca famously defeated the invading Spaniards. The staggered agricultural terraces and intact fortresses show the Inca history in its rawest form and its ceremonial site will treat you to uninterrupted views over the Sacred Valley. Your transfer will then take you to your accommodation in the Sacred Valley where your evening is free to spend at your leisure before your journey to the hidden ruins of Machu Picchu starts tomorrow!

Meals - Breakfast, Lunch.

Day 12

Be at one with the Sacred Valley

You will have the day to explore the beauty of the Sacred Valley at your leisure. You can take a hike, or rent a bike and explore the valley or villages of Yucay and Urubamba, visiting their colorful markets and having lunch in one of the fantastic restaurants.

Meals - Breakfast.

Day 13

Conquer Machu Picchu

Transfer to Olantaytambo, where you will board the train to Aguas Calientes, which takes about two and a half hours. You will be met by a host at the Aguas Calientes train station, who will talk you through your itinerary. For Machu Picchu, you will be provided with an audio guide and headphones, so you can listen to the history of Machu Picchu.

Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas, is quite possibly the reason you came to Peru in the first place. It was recently voted one of the new Seven Wonders of the World and we guarantee that this magical spot will not disappoint you. Hidden among the Andes, the Incas managed to keep Machu Picchu concealed from the Spanish conquistadores for centuries. It remained covered by vegetation and, while known about by the local population, it was only revealed to the world in 1911 by US explorer Hiram Bingham.

In the afternoon you will take the train back to Cusco, where you will be met at the train station and taken back to your hotel.

Meals - Breakfast.

Day 14

Get under the skin of Cusco

Enjoy walking around the Imperial City of the Incas. The tour starts at the impressive Colonial Cathedral in Cusco which contains over 400 paintings from the Cusqueña School and several beautiful altars. Then you will visit the Temple of the Sun, the main religious center of the Incas dedicated to the Sun Cult, where the walls were said to be covered entirely with gold.

If you still have some energy left, as this is a private tour, we recommend asking your guide to take you up to the old Inca city of Sacsayhuaman, on the outskirts of Cusco. Here you will see and learn how the Inca's were able to move and lift enormous rocks, to construct walls so strong, that the building has survived all these years as well as a few earthquakes, mudslides and erosion. You can then take a taxi back to your accommodation but, not before taking in the stunning aerial view over the terracotta rooftops of Cusco from the Inca city of Sacsayhuaman (entrance fee to these ruins is not included).
