Day 2

Discover Lima as a local (City & Culinary)

This fascinating walking tour will help you gain a little insight into the local Limeño culture and history. After being picked up from your hotel at 9 am, the taxi will take you to the Miraflores market, where Peruvian merchants will enlighten you on the local produce and outline the different types of potatoes, corn and fruits that can be found in Peru. Feel free to grab some samples and don't forget to try the coca leaves! Following a short meander through the market, you will then hop on the public bus 'Metropolitano' to the historic center, where you can admire grand colonial buildings.

The Historic Center of Lima has been the seat of the Colonial and Republican governments since the Spanish foundation of the city in 1535 and is also an important indigenous center. Until the 1940s, it also housed Peru's richest and most influential families. As you stroll through the city center, pay attention to the changing style of architecture and the beautiful interior balconies. Upon arriving to Plaza San Martin, you will taste some delicious Peruvian pastries before heading to the main square. There, you will stop by a small outlet of the ChocoMuseum and will receive fun facts and information about the process of transforming the cocoa bean into the delicious chocolate that you will be savoring. Following this tasty treat, the tour will proceed to the Cordano Bar, where you will taste a typical Peruvian drink, the Chicha Morada, made from sweet purple corn. From here, you can either grab the Metropolitano bus back to Miraflores or you are welcome to stay in the historic center to continue exploring on your own terms.

Day 4

Exploring the white city

Today is free for you to explore this dazzling city which is unbeatable in terms of its culinary tradition and colonial history. Our ‘Arequipa Like a Local’ guide will take you on walking tour of the city and the best thing is that you’ll be your own guide so you’ll be able to decide where you go, what you see and how long you spend at each highlight. The handy, local guide provides you with all the information, including a walking tour route, map and descriptions which will fill you in with all the interesting facts, figures and history that you’ll need to make this a fantastic day of adventure. We recommend you to start your tour from the colorful San Camilo Market and make your way up to the traditional and beautiful Santa Catalina Monastery. Although you get to decide where you want to go or what you want to do today, we recommend that you don’t miss the Plaza de Armas, the Church of San Francisco, Yanahuara’s viewpoint over Arequipa, and most importantly, the red walls and blue windowsills of the 400 year old Santa Catalina Monastery.

If you’re looking to discover more about the impressive Santa Catalina Monastery, you can choose to add in optional guided tour of Peru's most impressive religious building. Founded in 1579 and remaining closed to the outside world until 1970, this fascinating monastery is not your usual religious building or convent. Occupying 20,426 square meters, the monastery is almost a fortress within the city of Arequipa. Alternatively, if you’re after a spot of shopping we have a unique optional shopping tour of Arequipa. You’ll visit all types of stores ranging from an Alpaca and Vicuna wool factory and an artist’s cooperation to an Anise liqueur factory, a renowned store specializing in leather items and a handmade chocolate, toffee and marzipan store. If you’re looking for an insider’s view of how the famous alpaca wool is made, we offer an optional guided tour of one of the top factories in Peru where you’ll learn about the whole production process and how it is transformed into different goods.

Tonight, seek out a local restaurant serving the signature dish and source of Arequipeño pride, Rocoto Relleno. The spicy Rocoto red pepper is de-seeded, de-stemmed and boiled to remove some of the spiciness before it is stuffed with finely cut steak, cheese, black olives, ground peanuts, Peruvian spices and sometime raisins. It is then baked beautifully until the cheese begins to ooze tantalizingly out from the top and it is only then that you will be able to see, taste and smell why the Rocoto Relleno is the pride and joy of Arequipa.

Day 15

four of the Inca jungle adventure - Machu Picchu!!

This is the most important day of the tour, the day that we arrive to one of the 7 Wonders of the World. Our last day of the tour begins very early in the morning in order to be able to watch the sunrise over the Incan citadel of Machupicchu. We begin the ascent from Aguas Calientes to Machupicchu at 4:30 AM, with the option of hiking the 1,500 Incan steps or paying the bus fare to reach the citadel. Once inside the park, your guide will provide a 2-hour tour of the ruins and most important temples within the ancient city. Afterward, you will be free to explore Machupicchu yourself and maybe even hike Huaynapicchu or Machupicchu Mountain (previous reservations are needed with months of anticipation, plus an extra fee. There are only 400 entrance tickets per day to climb these two mountains). On your own time, you will need to return to Aguas Calientes (via stairs or bus) in order to take the return train to Ollantaytambo or Cusco.

Meals - Breakfast.

Day 16
