It’s now virtually an extension of Tirana, joined to the capital by a ceaseless urban corridor full of hypermarkets and car dealerships. Blessed with a reasonable 10km stretch of beach, Durrës is a pleasant escape from Tirana and has a charmingly Mediterranean air once you get off the seafront, which can be very crowded, noisy, and a bit tacky during the summer months. The town has a long and impressive history, and for international visitors, the main reason for coming to Durrës isn’t for the beaches but for the interesting Roman amphitheater and superb archaeological museum. Llogara Pass (Qafa e Llogarasë – in Albanian) sits at the height of 1027m and is nestled in the middle of the Çika Mountain range, which is part of the Llogara National Park.

Just a 15-minute drive from Saranda, this UNESCO World Heritage site is a true gem. In reality, the city was founded by Greek colonists and has been continuously inhabited for centuries, resulting in a rich tapestry of archaeological layers representing multiple civilizations.

The site boasts not only stunning ancient ruins, but it is also located on a picturesque peninsula surrounded by lush flora and fauna, adding to the beauty of your visit. You’ll explore the theater, temples, and baths, and hear stories about the city's cultural evolution over time.

­ After visiting Butrint, you’ll continue your journey toward Gjirokastra, a city that offers a completely different kind of architectural charm, deeply influenced by Ottoman culture. After about a one-hour drive, you’ll arrive and begin your exploration of this UNESCO-listed town.

Here, you’ll visit the Gjirokastra Castle, perched high on the hilltop, offering panoramic views of the surrounding area. Part of the castle was used as a political prison during the communist regime, and it now houses the Arms Museum, showcasing military history from different eras.

Next, you’ll head to the Skendulaj House, a traditional Ottoman-era house that gives you insight into the region’s architecture and culture. You’ll also explore the Ethnographic Museum, housed in the very birthplace of Enver Hoxha, the Albanian dictator, offering a glimpse into the country’s complex past. Adjacent to this, you’ll visit a 300-year-old house, showcasing the impressive craftsmanship of Gjirokastra’s master builders, whose legacy is still visible in the city’s beautifully preserved buildings.

After breakfast at your hotel, you'll depart for Berat, a charming town known as the White City, set against the backdrop of the beautiful Tomorr Mountains. The journey will mostly be along the highway, with a few opportunities to stop for coffee and enjoy the scenic views along the way.


Upon arriving in Berat, you'll start your visit to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed old town. Berat is celebrated for its unique Ottoman architecture, and it has earned its place as a protected site due to its well-preserved historical buildings and the harmonious integration of the town with its surrounding landscape.


The main attraction here is Berat Castle, which has stood for centuries. What makes this castle particularly special is that people still live within its walls. You’ll wander through the narrow, cobblestone streets, where traditional Ottoman houses line the hill, much like they have for generations. The castle once housed more than 40 churches, and today, seven of them remain. One of the most famous is St. Mary's Church, which now houses the Onufri Museum.


The Onufri Museum is dedicated to Onufri, a renowned 16th-century Albanian icon painter. His famous style, particularly his use of a vibrant red color, can still be seen in numerous Orthodox churches across Albania and Greece. The museum provides a fascinating look into Onufri’s artistic legacy and the religious history of the region.

After breakfast, you'll begin your journey to another beautiful country rich in history and culture—North Macedonia. The day begins with a drive toward Pogradec, but before reaching the lakeside city, you’ll make a scenic stop in Elbasan, nestled in the heart of Albania.


As you travel through the central hills of Albania, you’ll pass by stunning natural landscapes and the quaint eco-village of Belsh, where you'll have the chance to marvel at five different lakes scattered across the region. The panoramic views are perfect for capturing the beauty of Albania’s inland countryside.


Upon arriving in Elbasan, you’ll enjoy lunch at a traditional restaurant before heading out to explore this historic city. Elbasan's fortress—known as Real Scami—was of great strategic importance during the Roman and Ottoman periods, and you’ll have the chance to delve into its fascinating history. From the fortress, you'll have a beautiful view of Via Egnatia, the ancient road that connected Rome to Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul).


While exploring the Elbasan Fortress, you’ll also visit Saint Mary’s Church and the King Mosque, both situated within the fortress walls. After the visit, you'll have some free time to wander around the castle and soak in the historic atmosphere.


After an hour of sightseeing, you'll continue your journey towards Pogradec, located on the shores of Lake Ohrid, one of Europe's oldest and deepest lakes. Pogradec is known as the "City of Artists" and offers a peaceful, serene atmosphere perfect for those seeking tranquility and natural beauty. This charming town rests on the lakeshore, providing a picturesque view of the Ohrid Lake, which is shared by both Albania and North Macedonia.

Today, you’ll cross the border into North Macedonia and explore one of the most iconic cities in the Balkans: Ohrid.


Start your day by visiting Ohrid's Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its historical significance and natural beauty. You’ll explore St. Sophia Church, a stunning example of Byzantine architecture, and St. Kaneo Church, perched on a cliff overlooking the crystal-clear waters of Lake Ohrid. The Ancient Theatre is also on your list, where you can imagine the city’s vibrant cultural past.


After visiting these landmarks, you’ll have some free time to wander the charming streets of the Old Town, soak in the atmosphere, and capture the picturesque houses and monuments that give Ohrid its distinctive character. For lunch, enjoy a meal at a traditional restaurant by the lake, where you can taste local Macedonian specialties.


Ohrid is a city with a rich history, once home to 365 churches, one for each day of the year, earning it the nickname “Jerusalem of the Balkans.” It is located on the shores of Lake Ohrid, one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes, which has earned the city and lake joint UNESCO World Heritage status for both cultural and natural significance. Ohrid is one of only 28 sites in the world to hold both cultural and natural World Heritage status.


After your visit and lunch, you’ll depart for Skopje, the vibrant capital of North Macedonia. The drive to Skopje will take approximately three hours. Upon arrival, you’ll check into your hotel.

After breakfast, you'll start your day with a visit to the stunning Matka Canyon, just outside of Skopje. This natural wonder offers breathtaking landscapes with its towering cliffs, deep waters, and hidden caves. You may have the opportunity to explore the Vrelo Cave, one of the deepest underwater caves in Europe, or enjoy a boat ride on the serene Matka Lake. It’s the perfect escape into nature before continuing your journey.

Next, you’ll head back to Skopje for a sightseeing tour. Explore the Old Bazaar, one of the largest and most vibrant in the Balkans, where you’ll find a mix of traditional Ottoman architecture, local crafts, and spices.

Afterward, you’ll continue your drive toward Prishtina, the lively capital of Kosovo. Once you arrive, you'll begin your exploration of this young, dynamic city, starting with the Newborn Monument, which symbolizes Kosovo's independence and vibrant spirit. From here, head to the Cathedral of Saint Mother Teresa, offering lovely views over the city and a unique clock tower.

Explore the historic Old Bazaar, and stop by the Ethnographic Museum to gain a deeper understanding of traditional Kosovar life and culture.

The remainder of the day is yours to enjoy at leisure. Stroll along the main boulevard, Sheshi Nena Tereza, where you can relax with a delicious meal or coffee at one of the charming local cafés or restaurants.

Overnight in Prishtina

After breakfast, you'll head to Prizren, one of the most picturesque cities in Kosovo. Known for its vibrant mix of cultures, Prizren offers a stunning backdrop of mountains and rivers, combined with a wealth of history.


Start your visit by exploring the Old Town and walking along its cobbled streets. Stop by the Sinan Pasha Mosque, an impressive Ottoman-era mosque that dominates the skyline. You’ll also visit the Prizren Fortress, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city and its surroundings, and wander through the Shadervan Square, the heart of Prizren, where locals and tourists gather.


Next, visit the Albanian League of Prizren, a historically significant building that played a key role in the 19th-century Albanian national movement. Don't miss the Muzeu i Prizrenit (Prizren Museum), which showcases artifacts and exhibits related to the region’s rich cultural and historical heritage.


After a thorough exploration of Prizren, you'll continue your journey into Albania, heading toward the medieval town of Kruja, which has great significance in Albanian history.


Kruja is best known for being the stronghold of Gjergj Kastrioti (Skanderbeg), the Albanian national hero who fought against the Ottoman Empire. You'll visit the Kruja Castle, where Skanderbeg made his last stand, and the Ethnological Museum housed in a traditional Ottoman-style building. The Skanderbeg Museum within the castle is a must-see, dedicated to his life and battles for Albania’s independence.


Stroll through the Old Bazaar, a charming market where you can find traditional crafts, Albanian souvenirs, and local products like olive oil, handmade carpets, and intricate jewelry. The town’s peaceful atmosphere and scenic setting offer a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration.

Depending on your departure time, you may have the opportunity for a quick stop to stretch your legs or enjoy one last cup of coffee in a charming local café.


Upon arrival in Tirana, you can take a brief city tour, visiting the city’s key landmarks, including the Skanderbeg Square, Et'hem Bey Mosque, and Tirana’s Pyramid. The city has a rich mix of Ottoman, Italian, and Soviet-era architecture, and you can see how the old and new blend together in this bustling metropolis.
