Itinerary

You better not be water shy on this trip. It already starts with the 10 million liters of the Victoria Falls. Per second, mind you. And when the elephants are up to their necks in water, you're already in Chobe National Park. Still, just a puddle compared to the waterways, lagoons and floating islands of the Okavango Delta. 20,000 square meters of World Heritage Site, overflowing with plants and animals. The best way to see it is on dry feet during a sightseeing flight over the paradise.

The suitcase is ready, your budgie is in care of the neighbor, it's time to go! Your plane takes off in the direction of Africa.

Welcome to Victoria Falls!

Day 3

Rushing Victoria Falls and drive to Chobe National Park

Today you have plenty of time to marvel at the thundering Victoria Falls and the rainforest. The circular hiking trail along the falls always opens up new perspectives and photo opportunities of the impressive UNESCO World Heritage Site. You then travel to Kasane in Botswana. The city is located on the Chobe River, right next to the national park of the same name, which is known for its large herds of buffalo and elephants. But before you set off on your first safari tomorrow, relax in your accommodation in the afternoon.

Chobe Safari Lodge
Chobe Safari Lodge is located on the river of the same name in Kasane, just a few meters from the gate to the national park. The lodge with pool, restaurant and bar awaits you with a warm atmosphere and individually decorated rooms. Vervet monkeys like to pose as photo models on the extensive grounds, and from the grounds you have a view of the fascinating Chobe floodplain. With a bit of luck, you might spot elephants or hippos from here.

The driving distance is approx. 100 km.
Renovation work is taking place in various areas of the Chobe Safari Lodge between 08:00-18:00. During this time there may be visual and acoustic disturbances. In order to keep the impact as low as possible, the neighboring common areas of Chobe Bush Lodge may be used. We ask for your understanding.

Day 4

Animal Kingdom Chobe National Park

Time for the first safari. Chobe National Park is home to the full diversity of African wildlife. On a guided safari in an open off-road vehicle, you can get particularly close to the animals that do not often come directly to the Chobe River. Most of the animals graze in the mornings, so the opportunities for game viewing on land are ideal. Lions and other big cats, which like to stay in the shade of the bushes, are also easier to see. At lunchtime, the animals lie lazily in the shade - and you in your accommodation. A three-hour boat trip is scheduled for the afternoon. Thanks to the open river landscape, you are very likely to spot elephants, hippos and crocodiles. Many antelopes can also be seen enjoying a drink on the banks. A special spectacle: the elephants bathing in the river.

After breakfast, we have prepared an approximately one-and-a-half-hour boat trip on the Okavango, where you can observe hippos and crocodiles. Then it's off on safari in an open off-road vehicle in the animal-rich western Bwabwata National Park. Hippos, elephants, antelopes and numerous bird species live here. As the animals gradually hide from the scorching sun, you too have earned a lunch break. On your way back through the park to the lodge, you will have further opportunities to observe animals. End the day with a cozy sundowner.

Day 8

Tsodilo Hills

The unforgettable wildlife experiences continue in the former Mahango National Park, which was incorporated into the Bwabwata National Park in 2007. The journey then takes us to Botswana, to the northern part of the Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the so-called "panhandle", the river becomes wide and leisurely before branching out. The journey leads to the Tsodilo Hills: the four imposing hills of quartz rock rise up from the plain and play a very special role in the culture of the San and the Hambukushu. Tsodilo Hills was the first rock art site in southern Africa to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During the approximately one-hour guided tour, you will see some of the more than 4,000 rock paintings. You will reach your accommodation in the afternoon.

The idyllically situated Xaro Lodge is a bird paradise away from the hustle and bustle. Peace and seclusion are guaranteed on this island in the Okavango not far from Shakawe, as you can only get here by boat. Romy Berchtenbreiter and Shaun Clemence have created an atmosphere where you can only feel at home with their warm hospitality, excellent cuisine and lush green grounds with pool. The house tents with their own veranda, built on wooden platforms, blend wonderfully into the island landscape with its rich vegetation and tall trees. Large sliding glass doors and windows offer an unobstructed view of the river and the surrounding area, even from your spacious room.

The driving distance is only about 180 km, but the journey takes a good 5 hours (possibly up to 6 hours after heavy rain) because the road is very bumpy.

Day 9

Boat trip along the pan handle

In the morning, you will explore the island together with your tour guide and your local guide on a one-hour hike. Afterwards, there will be time to relax at your accommodation. In the afternoon, you will cruise on the Okavango for around three hours and immerse yourself in the paradisiacal birdlife, which consists of up to 380 bird species. Countless species of heron find their nesting places and food in abundance in the reeds. In addition to the diverse birdlife, hippos, crocodiles and sitatunga antelopes are not uncommon here.

Day 10

Okavango Delta

The onward journey towards the Okavango Delta leads via Maun. This typical Botswana town is considered the gateway to the delta. Modern shopping centers stand right next to mud shacks and huts; cattle and goats lie on the traffic islands or stroll along the streets. Then you reach your accommodation. Stow your luggage and take your time to look around: Fantastic birdlife wherever you look, but friends of big wild animals will also get their money's worth with regular sightings of elephants and many other animals.

Gomoti River Lodge
Gomoti River Lodge is located in the Okavango Delta, on the edge of the Moremi Game Reserve. Here, comfortable house tents with en-suite bathrooms have been erected on raised wooden platforms on the banks of a lagoon of the Gomoti River. This lagoon and the adjacent floodplain carry water seasonally and transform into green floodplains or dry savannah depending on the season. From the veranda, you can look directly over the seasonally flooded area of the river or into the bush savannah, where elephants or antelopes are welcome guests. In the morning, when nature awakens, you will be delighted by the excited chirping of the birds and in the evening you can enjoy a campfire on the sundowner deck.

Day 11

Happy Hippos in the Moremi Game Reserve

You set off early in the morning in an open four-wheel drive vehicle to the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta. The national park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014 and is known for its rich variety of wildlife, such as hippos, the large herds of elephants and buffalo as well as all the predator species of southern Africa. The whole day becomes a safari in this incomparable and unique region. The Okavango carries large amounts of water here, so that even the otherwise usually delicate mopane bushes grow into gigantic trees. You return to your accommodation as the sun sets.

The maximum driving distance is 200 km. The journey takes up to 11 hours, including game viewing. With a bit of luck, you may spot animals on the approximately two-hour drive from Gomoti River Lodge to the South Gate of the Moremi Game Reserve.
Please bring sufficient sun protection and headgear for the day trip to the Moremi Game Reserve. In the winter months, a warm jacket and hat are essential for the trip in an open off-road vehicle.

Day 12

Botswana from above

An eventful day on land, on water and in the air: In the morning, you set off in an open off-road vehicle towards the Moremi Game Reserve, known for its leopards and the highly endangered African wild dog. You reach Xakanaxa in the Moremi Game Reserve around midday. There you change to a boat and sail through the labyrinth of water. The species-rich birdlife dominates the acoustic backdrop and adds a splash of color to the landscape. Ideal breeding conditions prevail here. Birdwatchers will get their money's worth today. Crocodiles can be seen sunbathing on the open banks, as well as grazing hippos and elephants. The water attracts birds of prey such as bateleurs and spotted eagles. After the boat safari, a small plane awaits you. The twenty-minute flight takes you over parts of the Okavango Delta to Maun, from where you will be driven back to the lodge.

Farewell to Botswana

Watch once again as the morning sun colors the landscape. Then it's time to say goodbye. Your tour guide will take you to Maun airport. You will fly to Johannesburg in the early afternoon and continue home in the evening.
