Itinerary

Winner of a National Geographic Adventures '50 Tours of a Lifetime' Award! From Seattle, Washington to East Glacier National Park, Montana, this Epic trip combines portions of three of our favorite tours - the Washington Epic, Idaho's Selkirk Loop and a chunk of the Glacier National Park tours – spinning through three states and finishing with a one-of-a-kind train ride. Take on the Cascade, Selkirk and even the Rocky Mountain ranges as you spin through this 700-mile, 10-day extravaganza. On arrival in Whitefish, Montana, hop aboard Amtrak's Empire Builder train, with private sleeping cars - and head right on back to Seattle.

Den 1

Meet in Seattle, shuttle to Arlington then ride to Marblemount, the "Gateway to the American Alps"

After meeting in Seattle, we shuttle northward to Arlington to begin our ride. Snow-capped mountains begin to press in on both sides of the road as we near the tiny town of Marblemount at the base of the Cascade Mountains – otherwise known as the "Gateway to the American Alps." Stay tonight at North Cascades Inn.

55.3 miles · +1,461 ft / -1,249 ft

Den 2

Ride through the heart of North Cascades National Park

Today's ride features 5,000 feet of climbing, over gorgeous Washington Pass and into Washington's Wild West - the Mazama / Winthrop area. You'll do a 50-mile gradual climb on the North Cascades Scenic Loop and cruise through Ross Lake National Recreation Area. Finish off with a 25-mile descent into Mazama.

74.2 mi. +5420 ft. / -3638 ft.

Den 3

Ride into the heartland - from Mazama to Omak, through the oldest wildlife area in Washington State

From Mazama, ride through Okanagan National Forest, skirting the edge of the Sinlahekin Wildlife Area – the oldest wildlife refuge in Washington State – a 19,000-acre park that was originally a mule deer preserve. Cedars, hemlock and Douglas fir give way to scattered ponderosa pines, then sagebrush and finally wide-open prairies. Dismount for the day in Omak – locally renowned for its Omak Stampede Rodeo – nestled just below the Canadian border on the Okanagan River. Stay at the Peppertree Inn.

Den 4

Omak, Washington to Colville: 4,000 feet of climbing

As you head toward the Selkirk Mountains, you'll begin to leave the prairie behind and pedal up into stands of Ponderosa pine and aspen. Watch for white-tailed deer, moose, and blue grouse! Today's route winds through the Sherman Creek Wildlife Area and across Lake Roosevelt, formed by the Grand Coulee Dam.  Ride through Kettle Falls, a former rendezvous point and fishing grounds for the Yakama, Nez Perce, Flathead, and Blackfeet tribes (to name a few), whose seasonal salmon catches would net up to 3,000 fish per day! Spend tonight in Colville, a one-time trading center for the Upper Columbia region.

101.5 miles · +7,078 ft / -6,575 ft

Den 5

Ride from Colville to gorgeous Sand Point, Idaho, on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille

Today's ride takes you through Colville National Forest to a well-earned 2-night stay on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille, the second largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. Dinner is on your own tonight.

129.1 miles · +5,509 ft / -4,948 ft (or less)

Den 6

Stay put in Sand Point: ride, hike, fly-fish, golf, go rock-climbing…you get the idea.

Stay put in Sandpoint – a fun-loving mountain town hugging the shores of sparkling Lake Pend Oreille and surrounded by the Selkirk, Cabinet and Bitterroot mountain ranges, Ride, hike, play golf, go fly-fishing or try some rock-climbing – take your pick (not included) ... or take a 12-mile ride (climb) up to Schweitzer Ski Resort, Idaho's second largest ski area. Lunch is on your own.

Den 7

Finish crossing the Idaho panhandle on the way to Libby, Montana

Today we finish crossing the Idaho panhandle en route to the historic mining and timber town of Libby, Montana. Mountains, rivers, and forests abound. Visit Kootenai Falls, a site sacred to the Kootenai tribe that is one of the largest remaining free-flowing falls in the northwest.

95 miles · +3,254 ft / -3,300 ft

Den 8

Libby to Whitefish, Montana, gateway to Glacier National Park

Pedal along the shoreline fo Lake Koocanusa in Kootenai National Forest. From Eureka, Montana, shuttle the last busy miles of highway to Whitefish - the gateway to world-famous Glacier National Park!

75.7 mi. +5484 ft. / -5001 ft.

Den 9

Ride up and over the Continental Divide on the Going to the Sun Road

Today, ride up and over the Continental Divide on the famous Going-to-the-Sun Road to Logan Pass and descend to East Glacier. If you haven't ridden Logan Pass, the signature route through Glacier National Park, you're in for a treat. From its beginnings at Lake McDonald, the road gently climbs higher and higher as the views unfold: alpine meadows and lakes, peaks skirted by fields of wildflowers and washed by waterfalls, the occasional bighorn sheep or mountain goat. Utterly spectacular. Board the train back to Seattle after a quick shower and bite to eat in East Glacier.

69.8 mi. +7176 ft. / -5570 ft.

Den 10

Wake up on the train. Watch the scenery spin past as you head back to Seattle.

Having caught the train yesterday, you'll have spent the evening on board, reminiscing and relaxing, and retire to your private sleeper car. Wake up in the morning, have breakfast (still on the train), and arrive in Seattle at about 10:30 am for your return trip home. (Expect the train to be delayed - it often is.)

Ubytování

Our regional expertise, a constant re-evaluation of last year's inns, and a continuing search for the best experience ensure that our lodging is always among the finest the area has to offer. By limiting the number of guests on each trip, we expand our choices and are able to fit into some smaller, award-winning bed and breakfasts and country inns that wouldn't be able to accommodate a larger group.

Lodging is based upon two people sharing a room with a private bath. If you're traveling solo on any of our trips and you're open to sharing a room with another solo traveler of the same gender, you pay 50% of the single supplement fee up front. If we are able to assign you a roommate, that fee is refunded to you. You can guarantee a private room and bath if you pay the full Single Supplement Fee. Occasionally, a room with two beds consists of one bed plus a rollaway bed or sofa bed. Call our office to see if this is applicable to the trip and date you select.

Doprava

You are welcome to ride in the van at any time - no explanation required. Some want a lift for just a few miles; others have ridden in the van for the entire trip. It's your vacation - you decide.

We use a fleet of specially ordered and customized 15-passenger vans. Most have a seven-liter V-10 engine, high rear axle ratio, and heavy-duty trailer towing package for efficiently moving a van full of people pulling a large trailer full of luggage and food. Each van also has heavy-duty professional bicycle racks on top of a custom-made, steelwork platform on the roof.

Pojištění

Jídlo

All meals except for one lunch and one dinner are included in the cost of your tour. On the days that you're on your own for a meal, there will be ample options within walking distance of our location.

At Bicycle Adventures, we like to eat well. Dinner is eaten together at the best restaurant in the area each night. If we have to shuttle everyone a short distance to get to that special place, we do it. At most restaurants, you order what you want from the menu. Except for alcohol, everything is included, even appetizers, salad, soup, and dessert. Breakfast is typically provided by the hotels and inns that we stay at, but if there's a local spot known for great breakfast, we'll find it, and you'll be treated to a nutritious meal to start your day. Lunch is provided at a state park or similar scenic setting midway during the day’s ride. Guests are always surprised at the variety and quality of lunches we prepare. Besides sandwich fixings and cold drinks, we offer fresh fruits and vegetables and hot lunches such as tortellini with pesto or veggie burritos. If you prefer a certain item of food or drink, just let your tour guide know and we will be sure to prepare just the right lunch to keep your energy up for the rest of the day.

During the day water, fruit juices, soft drinks, energy bars, fruit, and snacks are available from the van. A cold beer from our cooler waits at the end of the day, and you can relive the day’s highlights at our wine and cheese party before dinner.
