Details of the Tauern Tour cycle tour in Austria
From Salzburg, you cycle along the Salzach river via Hallein to Golling. Optionally, you can take an additional tour into the Bluntau valley. The next day you cycle via Werfen and Bischofshofen to St. Johann im Pongau. Then cycle to Bruck an der Glocknerstraße, where you can take the Postbus to Austria's highest mountain from July. As an extra tour, you can cycle around Lake Zell before reaching Kaprun. After a trip on the Pinzgaubahn to Krimml, you cycle to Lofer and back to Salzburg.

Things to know about the Tauern Tour cycling vacation in Austria
This moderately difficult cycle tour takes you along the well-signposted Tauern Cycle Path, which is of a high quality. There are mainly quiet paths and country roads. Only a few stretches are more heavily used. As there are occasional slight inclines, a solid basic level of fitness is recommended.

Leave Salzburg and head south. You cycle through shady meadows along the Salzach to Hallein, a Celtic town that was once rich from salt mining. Hallein surprises with a romantic old town with small alleys, archways and houses with magnificent facades. You pass the rushing waterfall and pass Golling and continue on the well-developed cycle path to St. Johann. The towers of the Pongau Cathedral rise up unmistakably like double mountain peaks.

You continue cycling along the Salzach via Schwarzach to Bruck an der Glocknerstraße. From here you can take a trip by public transport along the High Alpine Road to the 3,797 m high Grossglockner, Austria's highest mountain (on your own). If you prefer to cycle directly to Kaprun, you should definitely visit the impressive high mountain reservoirs here.

The local Pinzgaubahn takes you to Krimml. There, the largest waterfalls in Europe await your visit. You cycle back through the Hohe Tauern National Park and the Oberpinzgau, constantly accompanied by the snow-covered three-thousand-meter peaks. Lush green meadows and cozy little villages alternate and provide a fairytale backdrop.

You should take a refreshing swim in Lake Zell. Via the castle village of Maishofen and Maria Alm with its famous pilgrimage church, you will quickly reach Saalfelden, where you can enjoy your lunch break. Other highlights on your way to Lofer are the Seisenbergklamm and the Lamprechtshöhle near Weißbach.
