Itinerary
Trekking to Everest Base Camp via the Cho La Pass at 5,420m offers an adventurous alternative to the traditional route. This challenging trail appeals to thrill-seekers who prefer the tough route over the high north-south mountain range. The trail links the Khumbu Valley and Gokyo Valley, crossing the Cho La Pass, which stands between Cholatse and Kangchung (6,063m). It typically takes two days to traverse the pass, with accommodation available at Dzongla and Thangnak, each about six to seven hours apart.
Crossing the Cho La Pass does not usually require special equipment in good weather, but trekkers are advised to be well-prepared with mountaineering gear. Many consider the side trip to Gokyo Valley via the Cho La Pass an essential part of their Everest Base Camp Trek experience. The mountain views are spectacular, and the shimmering blue lakes add to the natural beauty of the area. Due to its difficulty, it's important to avoid crossing Cho La in bad weather or if you're not in peak physical condition.

Arrival KATHMANDU (1300m/4265ft)
Místo startu
Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) त्रिभुवन विमानस्थल, त्रिभुवन विमानस्थल, Kathmandu, Bagmati Zone, Nepal
Fly to LUKLA (2800m/9187ft); trek to PHAKDING (2610m/8563ft) 2-3 hours trek; 200m descent, 50m ascent
Early morning, we fly from Kathmandu to Lukla and trek to Phakding, a 3-hour journey. Descending above farmlands, we pass through Sherpa villages like Chheplung, Ghat, Sano, and Thulo Gumela. Along the way, we encounter shrines and monasteries such as Drangdrak Gompa and Pema Choling Gompa, offering breathtaking views of the sacred mountain Kumbila and the sister summits of Kusum Kanguru peaks. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trek to NAMCHE (3420m/11221ft) 5-6 hours/1000m ascent, 100m descent
Heading towards Namche Bazaar, we pass through the hamlets of Zamphute and Tok Tok, with dazzling Thamserku glistening in the sun accompanying us throughout much of our trek. Continuing through the scenic Sherpa villages of Benkar, Chumoa, and Monjo, we reach Utche Choling Gompa, perched on a bluff overlooking the Dudhkoshi River.
Further on, we traverse between bluffs to enter Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The second half of our journey to Namche Bazaar involves a steep climb, starting with crossing through the last village of Jorsale. A steep, stepped path leads us to a spectacular high bridge over the Dudhkoshi River gorge, just before it meets its tributary, the Bhote Koshi.
Slowly ascending, we reach the heights of Namche, where we catch our first glimpse of Mt. Everest peering over the Lhotse-Nuptse ridge. After about 1.5 km (0.9 miles), we finally arrive at Namche Bazaar. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trek KHUMJUNG and return back to Namche for Acclimatize rest (3780m/12402ft)
Today, we begin our climb from Namche, ascending the U-shaped hillside next to the Gompa. Along the way, we enjoy views of snowy peaks including Kwangde, Khumbila, Thamserku, Tagi Tau, Pharchamo, the tip of Ama Dablam, and Taboche. We reach a signposted intersection and turn right towards Khumjung.
Passing a large chorten and a long mani wall, we reach a viewpoint offering vistas of Everest, Lhotse, Lhotse Shar (East), Thamserku, Ama Dablam, and Taboche. Descending, we pass the Hillary School on our way to Khumjung.
Khumjung is renowned for its gompa, located in a cedar grove in the upper part of the village. Inside the gompa, there is an image of Guru Padma Sambhava, flanked by his consorts. The gompa also houses a skull believed by some lamas to be that of the yeti, although this claim has been debunked by scientists in the US.
We return to Namche for the evening. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trek DOLE (4090m/13419ft)
We trek from Khumjung to Dole, which is approximately a five-hour walk. Leaving Khumjung, the trail ascends to a large chorten atop a ridge before continuing to Mongla. From Mongla, we descend to Phortse Tenga and finally reach Dole. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trek MACHHERMO (4410m/14469ft) 1-2 hours; 320m ascent
From Dole, it's a short trek of only 1-2 hours to manage the ascent rate. We begin with a steep climb out of the forest onto an increasingly barren hillside. Passing through several summer settlements used for yak grazing in the summer months, we continue past the village of Lhabarma.
The trail then ascends gently past a large chorten to Luza. Continuing upwards, we reach a chorten adorned with fluttering prayer flags on the outskirts of Machhermo. Machhermo is nestled in a wide, flat-bottomed valley below the terminal moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trek GOKYO (4750m/15585ft) 3-4 hours; 350m ascent
We ascend steeply up a scrubby slope to a cluster of chortens on a hilltop, enjoying panoramic views of Kantega and Cho Oyu along the way. Soon, we arrive at the tiny settlement of Pangka village, situated at the end of the Ngozumpa Glacier.
Nestled between the mountain wall and a mound of sand and gravel, Pangka is home to six sacred lakes that mirror the surrounding peaks on their calm surfaces. After crossing a bridge, we encounter the first lake and traverse through the barren landscape to reach the second lake. Finally, we arrive at Gokyo village, located on the shores of the third lake known as Dudh Pokhari. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trek GOKYO RI (5360m/17586ft); back to GOKYO 4 hours return; 570m ascent, 570m descent
Gokyo Ri, standing at 5,357m on the north side of Dudh Pokhari, is the highlight of the Gokyo journey. Starting early in the morning, the trail begins by crossing a stream at the north end of the village and ascends for two hours to the summit. From the top, panoramic views unfold, showcasing Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cholatse, and Taboche, with the Ngozumpa Glacier cutting through the landscape like a massive tear.
The sight of Everest towering above all other peaks is truly awe-inspiring. After enjoying the vistas from Gokyo Ri, we descend back to Gokyo for the night. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trek THANGNAK (4700m/15421ft)
We descend steeply, passing the third lake Dudh Pokhari and following a rushing stream that connects the two lakes until we reach the second lake, Tajung Tsho. Continuing on, the trail leads us to the edge of the Ngozumpa Glacier, one of Nepal's longest, covered with debris and occasional meltwater ponds. Along the way, we are treated to stunning mountain views of Phari Lapche (6017m/19740 ft), the more distant and higher peak of Kyajo Ri (6186m/20295ft), and the towering icy wall of Cho Oyu. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trek LOBUCHE (4930m/16175ft) via CHO LA PASS
After yesterday’s strenuous trek, today promises to be much easier. As we round the ridge and head southward, the expansive Chola Lake spreads out below, framed by the majestic Cholatse peak in the distance. The view is breathtaking, and we continue walking alongside the lake for a considerable stretch. Our path initially leads towards Ama Dablam, but then we follow the contour of the hill northward, eventually descending into the valley where the Khumbu Glacier ends.
We arrive at the settlement of Lobuche shortly after, rejoining the main trail to Everest Base Camp where there is noticeably more activity. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trek GORAK SHEP (5160m/16930ft)
The trek from Lobuche to Gorak Shep begins with mostly moderate walking, though we steadily ascend towards an elevation of 5,160m. Starting below the lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier, we pass between the Changri Shar and Changri Nup Glaciers as they flow down from Changri Mountain to join the Khumbu Glacier.
The trail includes a steep section with switchbacks onto the glacier, followed by rocky and occasionally icy terrain with ups and downs. After crossing these challenges, a short descent leads us to Gorak Shep. Despite the extremely cold temperatures (often well below freezing) and frequent wind, the area offers stunning scenery with snow-capped mountains towering all around. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trek EBC (5340m/17521ft.); back to GORAK SHEP
Starting early from Gorak Shep, we head towards Everest Base Camp (EBC), immersing ourselves amidst the mountains rather than viewing them from afar, as EBC is not merely a viewpoint. Along the way, we pass by the shallow blue waters of Gorak Shep Lake, with the Changtse peak in Tibet and the Lho La depression visible straight ahead.
The trail takes us across several glaciers, icefalls, frozen pools of meltwater, exposed icy walls, and large boulders before finally reaching Everest Base Camp. Here, our trekking journey concludes, marking the beginning of mountaineering endeavors. We then descend back to Gorak Shep for the night. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trek KALA PATTHAR (5545m/18193ft); return trek PHERICHE (4240m/13911ft)
Finally, it's our pinnacle experience with Everest, the climax of our trek. We begin after an early breakfast, taking our time. We traverse the wide sandy bed of a dried-up lake and negotiate steep zigzags, ascending about 100 meters to enjoy spectacular views of Lingtren, Khumbutse, and Changtse.
Continuing our climb, we are treated to a panoramic vista of the Khumbu Glacier and the Nuptse massif before reaching the rocky viewpoint of Kala Patthar. It's a challenging ascent, but each meter gained offers more of Everest and the stunning Himalayan panorama. Sitting atop the Kala Patthar rocks, we immerse ourselves in the awe-inspiring scenery.
Descending is quicker as we retrace our steps through Gorak Shep and Lobuche, and then instead of heading towards Dingboche, we descend to Pheriche along the Khumbu Khola for our overnight stay. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trek back TENGBOCHE (3870m/12697ft)
From Pheriche, we descend towards Tsuro Wog, crossing the bridge over the Khumbu Khola amidst breathtaking mountain views. Continuing our descent through Tsuro Wog, we retraverse the path, passing through Orsho, Shomare, and upper Pangboche before reaching the picturesque Tengboche. Renowned for its grandeur, Tengboche monastery is the largest gompa in the Khumbu region. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trek back NAMCHE BAZAR
From Tengboche we move towards Phunki Tenga and now descend to Sanasa and Kyangjuma and then finally to Namche Bazar. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Trek back LUKLA
Our final day’s trekking follows the Dudh Kosi down to Lukla retracing the way we came up.Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
