Arrival in Muscat

Today we're off to Oman! We fly through the night and look forward to an oriental adventure between water and desert.
Depending on the flight time, you will arrive in Muscat at night or early in the morning. If you arrive on time, you will be taken to the hotel for the night, otherwise you will start directly with a tasty breakfast. The imposing Opera House, the first on the Arabian Peninsula, is located near the Corniche. Afterwards, we learn more about the wealth of the country and the perfume-making tradition at the Amouage Visitor Center; Omani women in particular are true masters in the use of incense. We continue to the Sultan Qaboos Mosque, one of the most important modern buildings in the Islamic world. With its striking sandstone façade, it also welcomes non-Muslim visitors. Finally, we experience the maritime flair of Oman on a dhow cruise into the sunset. We relax and enjoy the view of the coast. A perfect start! (F, A)
People haggle over prices early in the morning at the fish market in Muttrah. We then explore the largest market in Oman ─ the Muttrah Souk. The scent of incense, joss sticks and spices wafts through the many alleyways with their countless small stores. The National Museum is one of the oldest museums in the city. Old documents, historical ship models and much more give us a comprehensive insight into the country's eventful history. With its Sultan's Palace Al Alam, which we see from the outside, its forts from the Portuguese era and its souk, Muscat perfectly fulfills the cliché of an oriental city. There is also the modern, future-oriented urban area around the old center. We spend the rest of the day at our leisure before meeting again in the evening for dinner. 220 km (F, A)
Today we reach the mud city of Al Hamra at the foot of Jebel Shams, the highest mountain in the country. The old clay ruins tell of a rich history. We walk through the farming village and discover the ancient Falaj irrigation system, which has brought water to this arid region for centuries. Then we take the winding road up to Misfah Al Abreen, a well-preserved village that takes us back in time. Misfah was the favorite village of the former Sultan Qaboos. We continue by off-road vehicle through sand and gravel and reach the impressive Wadi Ghul, also known as the Grand Canyon of Oman. We end the day with a sunset from Jebel Shams before reaching our hotel at the foot of the mountain. 320 km (F, A)
We set off for the old capital of the country - Nizwa. Every Friday, farmers and locals meet at the cattle market in this centuries-old city, which is as photogenic as it is steeped in history, for the big cattle auction. As in the past, it is mainly goats and cows that are auctioned off to the highest bidder. Finally, we reach the city's landmark, the mighty Jabreen Fort, which towers above everything else. The round tower of the fort in particular makes a great motif. Afterwards, we learn more about the history and chronological development of the country at the Across Ages Museum. In the "Nizwa Souk", on the other hand, we have the opportunity to taste typical products of the country in an air-conditioned hall before ending the evening with a convivial dinner. 115 km (F, A)
After our delicious breakfast, we reach Birkat al Mouz, which is considered one of the most famous ruined villages in the Sultanate. In addition to large ruins and a banana farm in picturesque surroundings, the Falaj irrigation system can also be found here, which provides the population with water in a dry environment. After driving through this unique mountain landscape, we head into the desert by off-road vehicle: we then drive through the eastern Hajar Mountains to Wadi Bani Khalid, which is not only famous in Oman for its location. This unique oasis paradise is a wonderful place to swim. Perhaps you would like to do the same as the Omanis? The Wahiba Sands await us with dunes up to 200 meters high. In the middle of this world of constant change lies our comfort camp. The sunset, the canopy of stars over the desert and the sunrise the next morning: a very special experience! 390 km (F, A)
Today we explore the city of Sur, located directly on the Gulf of Oman. At the Dhow Factory, specialists show us how the traditional wooden boats are still built today. Later, we stroll through the pretty little town of Al Ayiah and enjoy fantastic views of Sur. In Ras al Jinz, we meet the Indian Ocean again in the evening. Keep your eyes peeled, we might spot some turtles. 340 km (F, A)
Today we drive back towards Muscat. We reach Wadi Tiwi via narrow, mountainous roads and stop briefly. We enjoy the breathtaking view of the mountains and river. The Bimmah Sink Hole is also worth a stop. It was formed by the collapse of a cave and is 20 meters deep. Sea water from the Gulf of Oman and fresh water from the mountains mix and make the water shimmer turquoise. Later we reach Mussanah and check into our hotel right on the beach. (F, A)
You travel back home with a suitcase full of experiences. See you in Oman! (F) Flight schedule, hotel and program are expressly subject to change. (F=breakfast, A=dinner)
