Itinerary
Get a picture of the complete island with its numerous impressive sights on this trip. From Jaffna in the very north, you will travel across the plain of the Golden Triangle through the central highlands around Nuwara Eliya to Galle in the south. Optionally you can extend your round trip with a side trip to the Sinharaja rainforest.
Round trip "Fascination Sri Lanka" with side trip to the unknown north On this route you will explore the most important sights of Sri Lanka as well as the Tamillen region with the provincial capital Jaffna. After a train ride to Jaffna in the far north, you will observe the fascinating wildlife of Sri Lanka during a safari in the Wilpattu National Park. Your journey then takes you to the three former capitals of the ancient kingdom - Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy. Other highlights in the so-called Golden Triangle are the mystical rock temple of Sigiriya and the unique cave temples of Dambulla. An unforgettable train ride past tea plantations takes you to the cool highlands of Sri Lanka. Marvel at the breathtakingly beautiful scenery around the small town of Ella and don't miss feeding orphaned baby elephants at the Elephant Transit Home. Finally, head back to the southwest coast where you can admire the well-preserved colonial architecture of the Dutch as you stroll through the fort of Galle. Optionally, you can extend your round trip with a side trip to the unique Sinharaja Rainforest before you start your journey home from Colombo. By traditional train from Colombo to Jaffna (B, A)
For almost a quarter of a century there was no train connection from Colombo to the Tamil north. Five years after the end of the civil war, the traditional train "Queen of Jaffna" is now running again.
*** Notes: Train travel in 1st class; train departs Colombo at 05:45 and arrives in Jaffna at 12:30; schedule changes possible! In case of train cancellation, transfer to Jaffna will be overland (about 9 hours drive including breaks)
Arrival in Jaffna and time for lunch.
In the afternoon, in the lagoon city of Jaffna, visit the Nallur Hindu Temple, the Naga Vihara Bhuddist Temple and the second largest fort on the island. Afterwards you will visit the market and one of the most important libraries in Asia.
Dinner and overnight in Jaffna including breakfast the next morning.
