Arrival to Tui

Tui is a historic town located on the Spanish-Portuguese border and marks the beginning of the Portuguese Way in Spain.

Overlooking the Miño River, it offers a stunning view of Portugal and a rich cultural heritage. The town’s medieval quarter, dominated by the Cathedral of Santa María, sets a spiritual tone for the journey ahead. With its blend of history, architecture, and natural beauty, Tui is a meaningful and scenic starting point for pilgrims walking to Santiago de Compostela.

This first stage from Tui to O Porriño covers about 17 km and begins at the foot of the Cathedral of Santa María in the historic center of Tui.

The route follows quiet trails along the Miño River and passes through beautiful woodland areas and rural villages. A highlight is the Romanic church of San Bartolomeu de Rebordáns, just outside Tui. As you approach O Porriño, the landscape becomes more urban, but an alternative scenic path helps avoid the industrial zone. The stage ends in O Porriño, a lively town with all the services pilgrims may need.

Den 3

Stage 2 · From O Porriño to Redondela

This stage covers around 16 km and offers a mix of urban and rural landscapes.

Leaving O Porriño, the trail soon climbs gently through forests and farmlands, offering pleasant views and shaded paths. A notable spot along the way is the village of Mos, with its small chapel and welcoming rest areas. The route continues through rolling hills before descending into Redondela, a charming town known for its viaducts and its location at the meeting point of the inland and coastal Portuguese routes.

Den 4

Stage 3 · From Redondela to Pontevedra

This stage is about 20 km long and offers one of the most scenic stretches of the Portuguese Way.

Leaving Redondela, the path climbs gently through forests and offers panoramic views over the Ría de Vigo. Along the way, you’ll pass through the village of Arcade, famous for its oysters and medieval bridge, Ponte Sampaio, where a historic battle against Napoleon’s troops took place. The route then follows tranquil country roads before arriving in Pontevedra, a lively and historic city with a well-preserved old town and the famous Church of La Peregrina.

Den 5

Stage 4 · From Pontevedra to Caldas de Rei

This stage covers about 21 km and offers a peaceful walk through vineyards, forests, and rural villages.

Leaving the historic center of Pontevedra, the trail quickly transitions into natural surroundings, following ancient stone paths and shaded woodlands. A highlight along the way is the village of Barro and the beautiful waterfalls of Río Barosa Natural Park, a perfect spot for a break. The stage ends in Caldas de Rei, a charming spa town known for its thermal waters and Roman bridge, ideal for relaxing after a day’s walk.

Den 6

Stage 5 · From Caldas de Rei to Padrón

This stage is around 19 km long and leads pilgrims through serene forests, farmlands, and picturesque villages.

Leaving Caldas de Rei, the path crosses the Umia River and continues along quiet country roads and woodland trails. A charming stop along the way is the village of Santa Mariña, with its peaceful rural atmosphere. The stage ends in Padrón, a town deeply connected to the legend of Saint James, where his remains are said to have arrived by boat. The town is also famous for its green peppers and strong literary heritage.

Den 7

Stage 6 · From Padrón to Santiago de Compostela

The final stage of the Portuguese Way spans about 24 km and is filled with anticipation as pilgrims approach Santiago.

The path winds through small villages like Iria Flavia, home to one of Galicia’s oldest churches, and continues through wooded areas and quiet backroads. Gentle ascents lead to the outskirts of the city before reaching the historic center. The stage ends at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where pilgrims gather to celebrate the completion of their journey in this sacred and unforgettable destination.
